messi is not a football player anymore he is a person product a one man business a media market leader and sells shirts and merchandise. football is 2nd or 3rd on the list he brings to a club. the club will only get or make a small percentage on the back of messi ? its around 90% foundation messi 10% left to split between club and others

the amount of money going out of football into players banks accounts are crazy ? clubs make so little profit from the playing football on the pitch its now gone the other way ? clubs are going broke and running big debts and players are now richer than the club they play for and that can not be right or good for the game

See you Kaz. Not that we will or that he’d expect the same contract, same as Silva isn’t getting paid now, in Spain, what he was on his last big City contract.

His total contract over 4 years was £500m, with all fixed and variable elements. That's £125m a year for wages, bonuses etc.Knock off the one-offs such as signing-on fee and loyalty bonus, which is probably £120m that puts his wages at double that £850k if my sums are right. But a lot of that would be commercially related.

When we first put an offer on the table to his father in 2013, I believe the wages were £250k a week and we would have covered those with 3 new commercial contracts, each of £5m pa.

People need to forget about the financial side of any deal. It's irrelevant in many ways as he's a unique proposition.

It’s like saying “I’m not going to buy The Met in West Dids as the business loan is £10k per month” whilst ignoring the fact it makes £30k per month in profit on a turnover of £50k.

The costs are frankly irrelevant if they are substantially less than the income it produces.

And all of that ignores his effect on the team on the pitch....

He also wouldnt generate the same shirt sales as he does at Barca , they are known round the world and their shirts are everywhere , for example go to any european holiday resort and you wont see ANY City shirts , even the Aguero shirts are Argentinian. Expecting Messi to improve our shirt sales to Barca's level in a couple of seasons is ridiculous , he wouldnt pay for himself and there is no proof at 34 he can hack it in a 38 game as season competitive Premier league ,when he's only known a six game a season La Liga for 15 years.
Messi for City is only going to happen on Football Manager or FIFA 22 or whatever other childrens game is available.

It’s not one or the other though is it?
Just think of this pitch...

“Hey Mr Haaland, we know several clubs are interested and you might even want to stay where you are, but how do you feel about playing alongside Lionel Messi next season?”

Bringing in Messi means better sponsorship and a greater attraction for potential other new signings. Yes he has peaked but his peak is so high that on his way down he’s still easily one of the best players in the world and one of the biggest draws.

The sad part is you've had it explained to you so many times that its not ignorance, its just arguing in bad faith.
 
We sign Messi and he brings the majority of his 181 Million Instagram followers with him and compared to City's 23M, it is marketing gold.

Get crowds back in grounds next season there will be a huge demand for tickets wherever he plays - think of all the dads who have kids with Messi on their Barca shirts, the ones that you see (pre-pandemic) in shopping centres. I've spoken to fans of other clubs, who don't get in the CL, who are desperate to see Messi in the flesh.

It's a no brainer.

Shirt sales make up virtually nothing in terms of revenue for any club. The club gets a minute amount on profit over a certain amount of shirts sold. The clubs receive money for the shirt manufacturing deal (ie we already get our shirt money from Puma).

Anyone thinking that Messi pays for himself based on shirt sales is not even close to being correct.

But Messi does attract news sponsors and commercial deals which is what anyone that serious about this subject is suggesting.

Shirt sales! Do you understand how those contracts work? Clubs get a guaranteed amount based on the company's anticipated sales, say 100k shirts per annum. If they sell more, there's probably a 10-15% add-on. It's the companies that make the money on shirt sales, not the clubs, bar what they get upfront.

If Messi joined us, do you think we'd struggle to replace Etihad as our shirt sponsor? We'd be looking to get £100m a year for that alone, which is £40m more than we get now. Wages paid from that alone.

looking at the treament Foden recieved against Sheff Utd , he was kicked from pillar to post , and got very little protection , so i am not sure a 34 year old Messi will be playing a lot of games , La Liga referees are a different breed to our officials.
