Metrolink to / from Etihad

So basically on derby day I can get the tram to the Swamp and get a bus from there - thanks a fuckin million. Do they want me to pop into their megastore while I`m at it.

To me it looks like if you want to catch the replacement bus you have to get off at Old Trafford

Deansgate-Castlefield engineering works Saturday 5th March to Sunday 6th March

During the required closure, no trams will run through Deansgate-Castlefield and the following Metrolink lines will be affected:

  • Peak-time Shaw services will operate to Exchange Square
  • Eccles line services will operate to Cornbrook

  • Airport line services will operate to Firswood (every 10 minutes)
  • Trafford Park line services will operate to Wharfside (every 10 minutes)
  • Ashton line services will operate to Bury

I usually change to an Etihad tram at Cornbrook after travelling from Navigation Road. Yesterday as I knew the Eccles line was not operating I took a Bury tram to Market Street and got the Ashton tram there.

On the way through Cornbrook there were loads of City fans waiting for an Etihad tram. Always check the Metrolink web site on the day of the game.

Similar to me. Had the heads up so got on at Firswood through to Victoria. Got Ashton tram there, all fine. But yes, tons of Blues at Cornbrook and St. Peters Sq. blissfully unaware. Total shit show after the game as usual as well. Usually bike it to work, but the odd time I use the tram first thing I do is check their website for balls ups.

Well I had an extremely pleasant and surprising experience after the game.

I left when Kane scored their third as frankly I had seen my arse. Walked round from block 211 and was waved through the fast pass channel by Metrolink staff. Waited on the platform for about 4 minutes then got the tram into Piccadilly. There was a tram due to Altrincham in 2 minutes miraculously an empty double and we all got on with room to spare as no other tram had arrived from the Stadium.

No wonder people leave early and why didn't Metrolink hold back that empty double to allow more fans to get back from the stadium?

I could run Metrolink more effectively than the buffoons in charge.

I think the special double was shuttling between Piccadilly & the Etihad post match. Just missed it after queuing but there was a Bury right behind. Got there and back quicker than normal from Chorlton changing at Victoria outward & Market Street on the return yesterday.

I've heard those working in train planning for TPE and Northern reckon they could do a better job of planning the Metrolink in their lunch hour using just the back of an envelope and a pencil. - At least that was the case when it was only two lines.

I can't see any improvements for fans given the state of national infrastructure. Today Northern Rail has cancelled all train services

This matters because we now are at a point when we can't even rely on trains to get us from A to B on what is a relatively normal day.

The rail infrastructure has pretty much collapsed North of Manchester. We have had years of disruption because of driver shortages. In fact it is has been shite for decades. They have hidden behind Covid and the weather.
On a good day the Northern Rail and Transpennine trains achieve an average speed of 30 mph and the passengers are crammed in like sardines. Even accepting these recent storms we have had one of the mildest winters on record this year and they still can't cope.
The North West is a huge conurbation (population circa 10 million) and we have probably the worst transport network in Europe including our roads full of pot-holes. I travelled aroud Eastern Europe in the 80s and those countries had better transport than us 40 years ago.
