I remember going to a Millwwall game in the 80's but fucked if I know which one. Think we wore the claret and white striped shirt with the grandad collar, always loved that shirt. Did Clive Allen play for us and Sheringham score a late equaliser for them? Trevor Hurlock played for them because I remember us all singing 'Where's your caravan'. Seem to recall it was a night game or maybe I went there twice. I know there was all manner of stories about all their hardmen coming out for it. Harry the Dog and any Eastend Cockernee villain worth his salt would be there. Have to admit I was shit scared but there was no way you couldn't travel as it had to be done. Think it was the night game but I remember one of the coach drivers telling us somebody had shot at the coach windscreen with possibly an air rifle on the way out amongst the numerous bricks and bottles that had cracked various coach windows.

Crazy days, Remember them coming up to Maine Road years later and remember being stood on Piccadilly train station after the game just watching small fights with one on one breaking out everywhere whilst everyone just stood around watching. Most of their lads all wore biege baseball hats I recall.

I think the first time in years was the 1-0 in 87

However in 1990 we played three times at the Den.

FA Cup Replay 1-1 (I think Hendrie equalized for City)

FA Cup Second Replay 1-3 (Sherringham scored at least once and Paul Lake scored a cracking volley at our end. We were 2-0 down after ten minutes, but the Police were telling us outside the ground that the kick off had been delayed
I also remember this game because Ashley Ward came on as Sub, but was promptly subbed himself when it went 3-1. He refused to go off because he didn't think that substitutes could be substituted.

1-1 Vital relegation game. I think Mark Ward scored for City.

It was a bit strange because when they played us in 1990 we were both in the top division and they had bigger fish to fry.

However in 1998 we were their only big game and all hell broke loose

Right ok I was definetly at the Sheringham one which must have been the night game as it was a replay and so I reckon I must have gone to the one in 87 as well because for about four years up to 89 I went to almost every game home and away. Didn't remember that about Ashley Ward but I see him quite often and will remind him next time about that.

The Ashley Ward story appeared in the Daily Telegraph the following weekend and it came from Howard Kendall so I assume it was true

Bumped into Howard Kendall at Lords for a Lancs final after he'd left us for Everton and he spoke really well about City. Got a photo somewhere, me in my Lancs top and Panama hat, he kind of went up in my estimation after that.

Went to this game on coach ran by Mikey Williams(rip) from Store St i think with mixture of young governors and some of the old kool kats, got near Deptford and drove wrong way into industrial estate,a nearby pub full of Millwall clocked the coach emptied and attacked the coach putting windscreen through with a paving slab, found out later driver suffered cracked ribs, couple of side windows went through and bricks and anything that came to hand being flung at each other. The driver got the coach back onto a main drag, police turned up and we walked to the ground getting there about half time,City had good crew on the train of about 70/80 and the coach lot,now stranded as the coach was fucked went back to London Bridge with the rest of the lads and ended up running Millwall, who turned up to have a go, back up the stairs from the platform. It had an atmosphere of evil around it the Old Den,more of an area thing in my opinion than anything to do with football, never forget that day, reminded me of the Ducky Boys out of the Wanderers

Went on the special that day - never saw mither but remember us being locked in at the end and their boys stood on the pitch long open terrace to our left, just watching us. By all accounts Guvnors more than held their own that day.

I went to this on the supporters club train. I remember the Guvnors had a couple of coaches parked up at Piccadilly and were trying to coax blues into travelling with them instead of the train.
"Fuck that" I thought "safer on the train"
The only trouble I saw was when a nasty bunch of older hooligans fronted us just by the ground, Police held then back, thank fuck.
Didn't mind mixing it with lads my own age at the time, but I was 19 and these fuckers looked like extras from Lock Stock and were all well into their 30's and 40's and built like brick shit houses.
Adcock's goal was funny, took ages to go in and you could hear a pin drop, then we heard the ball hit the advertising boards through the back of the net and then his high pitched shriek from the other side of the "stadium" and after split second shock, we looked around at each other and then jumped about like loons.
Like I said, now't really happened trouble wise, but it was certainly intimidating.
I think the Guvnors coaches came unstuck, which made me relieved to have stuck with my plan of getting on the train.

Turnout can't have been more than 800-1000 or so but all we're lads and all between 16 and 40. Remember it kicking off in the escort and at the turnstiles but this was nothing compared with London bridge later.

I went to one evening game back in the eighties. I remember the atmosphere in the away end was nerve wrecking when the final whistle was approaching. The thoughts of the game itself soon turned to how the hell are we getting out of here without trouble. Being a southerner was handy back then. Some great stories being told here, I don't get involved with violence but I still find it all very fascinating to hear about it.

-- Fri Oct 19, 2012 2:37 pm --

What about the game they we were banned? Any blues turned up that day and what was it like?

I was 17 and was on the service train that day.Made our own way across London, very naive and pissed. Heard the storey about the Selecta travel coach getting turned over

Finished amongst the two hundred boys at New Cross after not on purpose just turned out that way. When we arrived at London Bridge the four of us decided whichever the mob go we'll go the opposite as we we could hear the police radios and new something was about to happen. The mob turned left so we turned right as from the right the scream 'Millwall' and about 100 or so came screaming down the stairs. Result we were right at the front!!! luckily the mob turned ran past us and straight in.

How we got out alive I've no idea. Never been back
