I think it's an extortionate amount to pay for the guy (£20m+) but let's be honest he has performed consistently well for Villa, was Newcastle's best player by a mile even at such a young age and for such a young man has bags of experience. He certainly ofers a lot more than one season wonder Stephen Ireland. For some reason people seem to think Ireland is worth a similair amount as Milner which in my opinion is complete rubbish. He can play one position and if things aren't going his way he'll go into hiding and let the game pass him by without a care in the world. Based on Ireland's performances and career since making his first team debut in 2005 I'd say he is worth £7-10m tops.

What Milner offers us is more experience and an ability to perform well in a number of positions without any fuss or moaning about not being played in his favourite position. He does also pick up a fair number of assists and gets into positions to score goals. Apart from an inflated price tag which isn't his fault I don't see the problem with buying him.

Superb post, agree with all of that

according to ssn & the press (yes i know) city are digging in at £24 million & no more.

Still about double the amount he is worth. :(

I do not understand people who have that "it's not my money" attitude... we need to stop spending these insane amounts on average players like Milner and I thought this silly spending stopped when Hughes left.

It's payback time. You got £24M from us for SWP which was more than double what he was worth.

Just hope Milner turns out to be better value for you lot than SWP was for us.

Harsh that fella. If you had actually played SWP you might have got more for your money (having said that he was hugely overpriced)

Is it our money? No, so stop being so sanctimonious. The market is as the market does.

And Milner is worth top dollar. Third highest in assists last season just behind Fabregas which goes some way to dispelling the ridiculous notion that he's not creative. Where was Ireland in the assists table......?

city tax is always going to be the killer ....villa deserve a tidy profit because he has improved since joining ,he cost 12 million to them . maybe a 4million profit be fair , then 4 million city tax kicks in 20 million total ,,,anything over this walk away please city

When you get a player like Silva or Yaya Toure for around 25m it is blatently obvious that paying the same or even more for an average player (in comparison) like Milner is utterly ridiculous. And please stop with the "it's not our money" chestnut. This is not sustainable in my opinion. No it is not our money but that does not mean fans should not worry about these insane sums that are being spent! And let's not even start to think about what O'Neil can do with that kind of money.

At the moment there is a premium on good English talent. That is as undeniable as it is unavoidable. Milner is a proven success in the Premier League. Young player of the year and near the top of the assists charts last season. He is most certainly not average.
For all their potential Toure and Silva are not proven in the Premier League. Milner is therefore much less of a risk and will cost proportionately more.
Why is £20m-£25m for a proven game-changer in the Premier League an insane amount?

And why worry about what O'Neill can do with the money? Should we only get free transfers (like the astonishingly overrated Joe Cole) from our Premier League rivals?
