Seems pretty clear this has been called to shut down a lot of online speculation.
"We're inundated with false information, rumours, and speculation which is distracting us from our work."
That happens with every investigation. If the police ask for any information, however small, they can't complain when they get that. The online detectives posting crap they don't have to watch.
