Monaco - Post Match thread.

All this talk of a huge clear out in the summer and how that will change everything is a bit of a misnomer, we have spent hundreds of millions on more than a few bang average players, who knows if this summer will be any different.
As others have said in this thread earlier, throwing money around hasn't worked for us so far, we really do need to spend it more wisely.

i didnt think we'd win the game in Monaco, but i did think a 2 goal lead was enough insurance to see us through on aggregate. Shame that we surrended that with only half the team that bothered to defend it.

Slept now after the game last night and am still not happy at all, do I think pep got it right last night - not at all.

Then again I do think we are in our "rebuilding" process. (don't forget other clubs have been re-building for 2-3 years we are not 12 months in yet). We can see what pep wants to achieve and have seen flashes this season of what he will deliver. Its just that in my opinion we don't have the players to play that way yet on a consistent basis. We know what's needed, so does the club I bet as well.

Last night he picked a team of players who are all "first team regulars" of a fashion and they lost. To me it just highlights we are not there and ready yet.

We will get there its a case of waiting and looking at the bigger picture, not the knee jerk pep is crap reaction.

Ah well dippers on weekend to get it out of system.

Rather than being angry just ask yourselves if we played like that over two legs against Monaco, what hope did we have of actually winning the thing?

All or nothing in the FA Cup now. Win that and finish in the top 3 and we've had a successful season.

The whole world watched PSG try to defend a 4 goal lead last week and fail, but Pep thought we could go to the home of the top scoring side in Europe and defend a 2 goal lead?

We can't defend. It's very simple. Nothing over the course of the last 7 months has indicated that we are any good at shutting up shop. The only time we ever look good is when we attack the opposition. This in itself forces them back and limits their goalscoring opportunities.

We made the mistake of trying to defend and quickly ended up behind in the tie. Monaco then made the same mistake, they sat back and we went ahead again. How stupid do you have to be to not see that we should have kept attacking them? But no, we sat off again and got what we deserved for such an incompetent tactical display.

That's pretty much the way I saw it too.

Had a sleep now and on reflection, it's just another chapter in the story of a season where we shoot ourselves in the foot with a slow start and errors, mixed in with a failiure to convert chances (could have easily had 2-3 more last night if we didn't missfire).

Still think pep got it wrong first half and regarding Yaya.

On the whole very disapointing that we went out on away goals, but we go forward now, so much of what we have seen this season suggest we are heading in the right direction.

Top 2 and fa cup now please city

Spineless and gutless in the first half followed by mediocre finishing in the second half
Yaya should have been in there from the off if he wanted to control possession in the first half

As soon as they got the free kick I said it would be a goal, Willy doesn't defend those to well and we drop off too deep instead of attacking the ball.

Well what do you say after that display?

First half the biggest non-event by a City team in years. We allowed ourselves to be bullied out of the game and the scoreline would have been even worse without the early save by Willy. No shots and only one touch in the opponents penalty area is simply dreadful.

Second half Monaco sat back and we started our normal passing it about without any end product game. Wide men, wingers and full backs, could not find a decent cross between them. Chances came and went either from poor finishing or the fact that we thought a few more passes might help. Defence had nothing to do until a silly challenge by KDB gave them a free kick from near the touchline which we failed to deal with, heads dropped and game over.

The fans who went to all that trouble to get to Monaco were short changed and the players should be ashamed of themselves.

Not looking forward to the weekend, plenty of ability in our squad but a shortage of moral fibre.

And does Pep prefer fiddling with the team and altering tactics rather than getting results?

The FA Cup is now huge, win that and top 4 and we'll have done ok, not win the cup but still finish top 4 and it'll have been a 'meh' season imo.
Miss out on top 4 completely and questions, quite rightly, will be asked of our management team at the club.
