More changes at City (Gary James has left)

The Hyde Road ground was here:

As you come into Picaddily from Stockport, facing Piccadilly, it's on your right, it's now a big shipping container yard.

The Hyde Road hotel (where Manchester City Football Club Ltd was formed) was just on Hyde Road, between the two little bus stop symbols.

Plus the actual name of the person who actually suggested that St. Mark's play football - we do not know who introduced the game itself to West Gorton. We know who set up committees etc. but not the person who said "here's a new game called asssociation football..."

If you ever find out Gary then let us know. There's a few long-suffering fans on here that would probably like to have a quite word with the bastard!

Can you check that link please Scall, I'm interested :)

I will still be doing my best to make sure everyone understands the power and strength of MCFC and that our history is given the respect it deserves. Part of that takes place on 21st March (10.30 am) when I will be talking at the Manchester Histories Festival (see my publisher's website http://www.manchesterfootball.org). That talk will cover the growth of the game within the city and will inevitably focus on City. Tickets
I went to the Gary James talk today,it was superb.
A lot he covered is in his book Manchester a Football History but he went a bit deeper into the Manchester Central part of our History.
Some of the stuff like arsenal not winning a trophy till 1930 & chelsea not winning one till 1950 was interesting.
He also talked about the forming of us by Anna Connell because of her horror at the violence of the Scuttling gangs at the time.
At the Hall was also a display from Moss Side Schools with pictures of Maine Rd i'd never seen before.
Also a display by Manchester City fc which featured the old St Marks shirt with the cross on it & the shirt we wore for the Muniich Memorial game was on display.
The Irish Heritage display made me laugh, the sports part of it led with newton heath that later became the rags moved their to be near the Irish fan base that had brought them into being.
No mention of the LYorkshireR bit & nothing about us,quality bending of History.

Thanks for the comments Bluemanc. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had to rattle through the story a bit as my time was reduced a little and I tried to pack a lot in. I could have talked in depth on any of those themes for hours, but had a lot to cover, so hope it didn't reduce your enjoyment.

If I'm asked to do it again I'll probably focus on the City story from the 1870s through to 1904 - the defining moment when football started to matter to Mancunians.

Good luck for the future,Gary.

I am forever in your debt as whilst reading one of your books I was utterly stunned to stumble across a crowd picture of me with my City-mad Grandad at a game in the 80's....the only picture I have of us at a match, and one I never knew existed.
Brought a tear to my eye followed by a big smile, and I thank you for it.

All the best in whatever you do,mate.

Great. I love it when people spot themselves. Let me know the book and the page and I'll see if I can trace where I got the original image. It may be that there's a better version (unlikely though).

I once had an old guy contact me who found himself on an image of the crowd in a book of mine. The photo was taken in 1926 and he was there as a young boy with his parents.

Also, David White was delighted to show me a photo of the crowd I used in Farewell To Maine Road and he is on it. Ironically, he's also on the opposite page as a City player.

Thanks Gary.I'll pm you later with the details,if I may.
