Mosquito

I don't know about the UK but here it's best not to be outside at Twilight especially if you live near stagnant water.
You're ok in built up areas though.
If we want to sit on the patio at dusk we usually light a couple of citronella candles that seems to keep them away.

All Australian houses are fitted with mesh fly screens on the windows so they can't get in even when the windows are open which is most of the time.

I've honestly never heard of mosquitos in England until this thread.

Midges in Scotland yeah but mosquitos in England that's a new one for me.

Some people just get bitten by them whatever nationality the mossie is, can't say I have ever had the pleasure in this country but have been savaged abroad.
 
Palo santo works, doubt you can get it in the UK though, has a nice natural perfumed aroma, the people here have been using it for centuries.
