Eaten alive in the Scottish Highlands in August, the little fuckers love me. Had worse i have been bitten by a rat, and a non venomous snake.
Isn't it midges rather than mosquitoes? I couldn't believe it. If the weather's windy, you're ok. If it's raining, you're ok. If it's still, and slightly hazy or foggy, they're on your case in industrial quantities, relentlessly, and it's a feeding frenzy. They actually get under your watch strap somehow to bite you there.
Re. mosquitoes. I use “essence de citronelle” in the summer months (don't know if it's the same word in English). A few drops on my pillow case, and some smeared on my ears, neck and forearms at bed time is completely efficacious, I find. I highly recommend it. It does work. You can get it from any over-the-counter chemist's.
A sneakier way, but the best of all(!), is to sleep with someone who has a better blood flow than you. It's absolutely foolproof. You wake up in the morning without a bite on you, and the poor woman (or whoever) is covered with them. Annoys the fuck out of them, though…
