I was really gutted when Nigel de Jong left, he had that fear factor about him where players would rush there passing in fear of being snaped.

3 That stick out for me are Kinkladze, Elano and De Jong.
As a 12 year old boy I couldn't grasp why Joe Royle didn't want to play him, In hindsight I understand the reasons for it now, but it still wrenched me as a kid when I found out he was sold.
IMO an on-form Elano could still feature in today's squad. There are plenty of supporters who bemoan our lack of a dead-ball specialist and Elano was the last truly great one we had, he rivals Balotelli in terms of Penalty accuracy as well. Ironically he was better before the arrival of Robinho, which is when I think he fell into a bit of a clique and stopped trying as hard.
Nigel I believe is the embodiment of what every supporter would play like given the chance. Always tried hard, always had a good rapport with the fans and was a true gent, despite his on field persona. Couldn't believe he could be sold for so little.
