One means progression into the next stage of a competition we'd still have to win three matches against Europe's toughest opponents to win, the other means a trophy in the bank with the added bonus of denying them a trophy. I'm going with the trophy. The League Cup is very low down on my radar, and Soriano excludes it entirely as even counting as a trophy (which is understandable), but it's still something to hold on to. Further progression into the Champions League however, means fuck all unless it is done consistently year-after-year. Plenty of teams have had good runs late into the competition but don't reappear. Doing consistently well in the Champions League is what's likely to win it (it took Chelsea nearly ten years of appearing in many quarters, semis and even a final) to win it, and Real Madrid haven't won it since 2002 despite constantly making it through to the late stages. Essentially Europe can wait, if we get knocked out by Barcelona my response, unless as a result of dreadful performances on our part, will be c'est la vie.

here's the thing, we are playing barca, we don't know yet about the league cup, I quite fancy the mackems at the moment.

Playing United is becoming a foregone conclusion these days, so it would just be another match we would be favourites to win, and would more than likely do so too.
Playing and beating Barca is and always will be more important now, because it is that level of club we are competing for the big trophy - and recognition. Put it this way, those the world over will remember us beating Barca over two legs, thus progressing to the last 8 of the CL than they will us beating united in the least important of the English domestic cups.
Personally I think our name is on that Capital One Cup and as great as it will be to notch up another trophy, regardless of who it is we beat to win it, playing and beating Barca would dwarf it all day long.

I'm choosing Barca as we don't know yet.... Sunderland could beat the Rags (they beat us) and we get the Mackems in the final.
