Most underrated player to play for city

Two mentions for Tommy Hutch and one for Peter Beagrie. They both deserve more. Well done the people who suggeated them.

I was quite enjoying this thread till I saw mention of Paul Sugrue (the worst City player I ever saw and another one of Allison's inspired choices) and then Barry Conlon. Quite upset me.

One player who always gave of his best was one I've not seen mentioned - Kenny Clements.

For those from the Sir Joe and Big Mal days I would have loved to have seen more of Freddie Hill. A wonderful silky player who I reckon was the precursor for Rodney.

Fab for me. Cannot believe he barely played for England at a time when your central midfielders were complete rubbish

Steve McMahon and Neil Pointon are good examples, I think.

Stephen Ireland too. He'd shown glimpses before, but that season after the takeover he was phenomenal. Unfortunately he couldn't keep it up, 'cos he was a bit of a loon.

Wasn’t it clements who did the “shithouse” challenge for evertons 2nd goal in the league cup quarters & he got subbed off straight after? late 80’s fuckin mayhem before & after that game!!!

A couple of memories from when I was young regarding Tony, the first one was one of those weird ones that just stuck with me and it was simply this, mid-late 70's, midweek evening game , horrendous weather, torrential rain and blowing an absolute gale.
I was stood at the front of the Kippax near the half way line, think Tony was playing right back or right midfield, someone from the other side of the pitch fired a long ball over to him, ball around waist height, I had a perfect view of the flight and speed, and it was all over the place, like one of those cheap ass plastic balls you used to get, and I remember thinking, FFS no way is he going to control that, it's going to skim off his knee or something and fly off into the crowd, but Tony just killed it dead and didn't even break stride, funny how that's always stayed with me !

Second was another midweek game, possibly Leicester, winning 2-0, they came back to lead 2-3 and on came Tony, equalizing at the Platt lane end hammering the ball from close range into the roof of the net in the dying seconds, I remember thinking, if there hadn't been a net, it would have ended up at Nell Lane.

Good solid player Tony who never let us down.

I remember being at Forest away when they were good back in the late 70's, early 80's they never lost at home..

They were the current European Champions at the time too..!

Tony scored to make it 2-1 to us (in the second half if my memory is still working properly).

We were going mad behind the goal as it was unbelievable that we were winning away at Forest, Brian Clough 'an all..!

Not only were we winning, we were playing them off the pitch..

Again, if my memory is not playing up, about 10 minutes or so to go, playing brilliant football and about to inflict a home defeat on the best team in the Country...

Ended up losing 3-2..!

Tony played one of his best games for us that day too..!

The highs and lows of watching City..!

Ha!

In the ADUG era Barry was by far and away the most underrated. Wasn't there a poster on here that used to get a load of flack for saying how good he was all the time (or have I misremembered)? Jesus, Mendy, and Mahrez are probably the most underrated of the current crop.

Aguero's weirdly underrated outside these parts. Everyone agrees how great he is, but as soon as he's compared to any all time great then he's all of a sudden got nothing to offer. It's uncongruent.

I've always felt David James was better than he got credit for.

Oh and Gundogan on this forum.

Darius Vassell.. Didn't score many for us but always came across as a trier which went down well with me..

Tony Henry, stylish player who struggled to get into the first team back in the day but was pretty decent..

Steve Kinsey, another hard worker, remember him scoring the winner at Blackburn, great times..

Kazimir Deyna, joined us, towards the end of his career. He was a true superstar back then, remember his goal away at Leeds, left us far too soon as did Tommy Caton who found his way into our team as a young teenager..

I'm sure he's already been mentioned and he wasn't with us long but Tommy Hutchison was a fantastic player for us.

A player who most certainly was overlooked by all the big teams back in the day so by definition was a very underrated player.

Seems like a lifetime ago watching these players who all contributed to giving me some unforgettable memories..!
I was sooooh excited ,as a teenager when John Bond signed Tommy Hutch!!! It was like wow..we ve got thst crazy 'old' cov left winger!! Brilliant!! Peter Barnes had bin my idol.....Then God sent me Tommy Hutchinson.brilliant player.even at 34 years of age.gave his all for City..and was a loyal long standing servant at Coventry ...supplying Ian Wallace and Big Mck Ferguson.....
When John Bond announced the signings of Hutch and Bobby McDonald..who i didn't know very much about..i went mental!! And when Gerry Gow came to toughen us u..Wow! Just Wow!! As an out of town Blue.....i could just feel the vibe..... i just knew we were gonna do somat....if not for cheating ref alf grey and livarpool.....(surprise suprise...) that 1980/1981 could have ended up as one of the top seasons in our history...with just a bit of luck in the Fa cup final.........
United were doing next to the square root of fuck all...jt was all City City City....Bond was effective for just a short time really...but what a ride.
