I only went in there once before a game, I thought it was a smelly shit hole but can see the nostalgia around it for some.
I had a mate said the same, that it stank of piss, and won't go in it. I know it can be a little musty when overcrowded, but it's still a charming little place

For an old school pub, I don't think it's too bad at all on that score. The only issue I've ever had with the place was, funnily enough, on the day we won the league in 2012. We were in there pre-match and for some reason the lager was absolutely rank when on all the other occasions I've been in before or since it's been a decent pint. Our lot aren't too fussy - we can take the odd mediocre pint as it comes - but this was so bad that we all left our drinks. As I was about to leave I made the point to the lady behind the bar that it was a poor pint and was met with a "couldn't give a fuck" expression!

Oh it was my mate thought it was rank, I have sat many an afternoon in there when I used to work split shifts in town and found it fine, and when I say musty I mean no more that the grey horse can get, never had a problem with the ale in there if honest.

Was before a game so it was busy, hammered actually which didn't help my experience.
Good job you didn't go upstairs then.
I'm not buying that upstairs could of been any worse!
