Mount Everest deaths

I used to like climbing but had one close call too many, the last one being a very close one. There's been at least thirty fatalities since I've been living out here, quite a few of them guides, so a no from me

I drive up Cadir Idris 2 or 3 times a week, does that count.

Been to the base camp, it was beautiful. It was off season for Everest (November) but it was 4 weeks of pure blue sky, completely serene, zero sense of any danger.

One night there was a minor earthquake, there was a couple of guys on a nearby mountain called Ama Dablam, a chunk of ice broke off above them and wiped them out. The conditions were as perfect as could be, they did nothing wrong, just pure bad luck.

Some people are idiots. 2 separate occasions since Covid I've advised groups of tourists here that due to weather and conditions they shouldn't go anywhere fucking near Carantuohill and 2 times they've had to be rescued. After my straight up telling them I've been up that mountain more than 50 times and in conditions like that I wouldn't go fucking near it.

I clambered up a few big hills and little mountains in my youth. The one thing that I learned from experience is that mountains always look a lot better from the bottom than they do from the top.

I find the whole story/mystery of Mallory and Irvine, in particular, fascinating.

Did the Great Orme and Rivington Pike, easy. As for Everest, Jon Krakauer's book is bloody terrifying.

I've done this and loved it. To me that'll be my biggest climb I won't do anything else lol

I am terrified of heights so not for me , standing on the first rung of a step ladder brings me out in a sweat

Cant see why people do it when there is a high chance you will die and stay up there forever

If I remember rightly, Nepal issued something like 450 permits to climb Everest this Spring. With all the support, guides etc, it meant about 900 people would be climbing the mountain.

Not been since pre covid and it varied so much from great to average and it always seems to be changing hands. Nice place in the right place and they get a lot of shooting parties in there, there are pheasants everywhere.

I thought Everest was that easy to climb nowadays you could do it in shorts & flip flops

This, it’s just a massive hill that’s more pointy than the rest
