So it's the sixth most expensive place to live and they actually make fuck all except big Vauxhalls and stuff they've dug up. Yet everyone seems happy enough.

You get paid fuck loads for stuff you dig up, we grow shit loads of food too and get loads of money from tourism.

This what I don't understand about Oz and I'm certainly not having a go at any Ozzies or the place itself but I go on what I can see around me as to a countries export success and wealth but I cant see anything Australian. I see German, Jap, French, British, Italian, American, far Eastern etc etc but nothing 'seems' to be exported from Australia yet it imports a hell of a lot so how do you lot make it pay. I know the Chinese have a big influence at the moment but beyond that.......

Have you seen how much iron ore is being dug up and shipped to China? Oz is literally for sale.

Europe has become pretty much irrelevant for australia so since the dollar got strong not much sort from people went to the UK. Remember the dollar went from 3 to the pound to 1.45 to the pound and we had COLA growth so as the recession hit the UK everything more than doubled in price from here.

Australia is huge, it has a small population, it has colossal reserves of iron, copper, zinc, uranium, it has huge natural gas reserves and even some oil and that's before you get to the very competitive and vital agriculture industry with cattle, sheep , dairy, fruit, etc all huge industries and expanding.

The reason that australia isn't doing other pets of the economy is that because resources and agriculture are driving prices, wages and the economy it is too expensive to do much manufacturing except niche and too expensive for many non specialist services.

But Australia's biggest export markets which are only all going to grow hugely with new trade deals are China, Japan, Korea and India. Australia has repositioned its economy to Asia and with 800m now in the middle class in Asia and that to double it is a very good market to have and one that as australia unlike most of Asia is very very underpopulated is likely to be very beneficial.

The main problem here now is we need the dollar to reduce and we need some hold on inflation as generally people have become too wealthy and things too expensive and it is definitely dulling hunger and innovation

Maybe you shouldnt..

Median house price in Sydney announced this week is $914,000 (460,000 quid)

Food is expensive, cars are expensive, 50% of Aussies pay for private health insurance

Other cities are cheaper but still very expensive to buy property

It used to be a great place where everything was cheap 20 years ago, but now I wouldnt bother coming here, everything seems to be a big rip off.

Probably be a lot higher when all the Aborigine settlements are closed and they are forcibly repatriated to the City.

Bit of a c**t that Abbot fella aint he.

I think if you read more about it you would find that its nothing to do with Tony Abbot but the WA state government

Its way too expensive to employ people here..........so manufacturing is declining rapidly (like the car industry)

Too many holidays

Leave loading (you get paid more when your on holiday for some reason)

Long service leave, 10 weeks extra holiday if you work for a company for 10 years

Sick leave is seen as an entitlement

High wages

Compulsory Superannuation payments (9.5% pa) by employer
