MP Sir David Amess murdered in Essex

I found an awful lot of what was said in the Commons today disrespectful.

First the good things. From what has been said of Sir David Amess he was a long serving and very well liked MP. Today MP's had the opportunity to remember him and they did so with some fine words and witty stories about a friend even when in an opposing party.

Then the bad - a number of MP's used the occasion to push govt and personal agenda's over hate speech and internet platforms. As yet there has been nothing to suggest Sir David's murder involved an attack on twitter or threatening e-mails or letters. But still they ploughed on. Quite a few of them conveniently forgot their own previous posts and what they said about even people in their own party and their leader. None of them made any reference to the hate speech in Right Wing papers and their editors - " Enemies of the people " headline pops to mind.

I understand that there is an issue but that was not the time to air them - get a Commons debate on the subject - there is a bill going through which is supposed to deal with it then but really not in a remembrance of a much loved colleague surely.

Sad that a bloke can be knifed to death whilst just doing his job and for many comments to be left wing vs right wing still.

A sad indictment of politics on the internet and if this sort of thing doesn’t bring people together, nothing will.

Another point, many silly things that are over the top, have been said on both sides of the aisle whilst pointing at the other side over the years, none of it justifies or causes murder, the **** doing the murdering is the only one to blame.

Thought the same tbh, really don’t like some of the discourse.

What has online anonymity got to do with this horrific and brutal murder that was carried out in person?

Shouldn't suspects on watch lists be the main priority? Sounds like MPs are using a tragic murder to push their own agenda.

A physical stabbing is a lot worse than some troll behind an alias saying hurty words and MPs (as usual) have their priorities wrong.

Fund resources to properly survey those on watch lists and other suspects.

I'll add it was a terrible attack on a serving MP. There needs to be more protection during their meetings with the public. Can't see how it can be done without profiling those people nearby.

I will also add that the general consensus he was a 'good man' is at odds with me. His voting record on gay rights is really bad and if every MP voted like this, gay people would still be seen like they were in the 80s and before in this country (ridiculed and persecuted). Even his daughter has told him she disagreed with him. Anyone who thinks gay people should not have the same human rights as a straight person is not a 'good man' in my view.

The Tories are definitely trying to push their own agenda. The current MP expenses policy allows for expenditure on security plus additional costs made at the recommendation of the police. So the budget is already there (a total of £3,380,172 being paid out last year). This is an increase on the £2000 per property that used to be paid to MPs prior to the expenses scandal. (and was abused by MPs who owned multiple properties)

Watch out for legislation calling for conviction of those who abuse MPs / their voting record and party policies.

Security assistance

We do not publish details of individual claims from the security budget, just the totals claimed by all MPs each financial year.
Security assistance can be claimed for additional security measures that enable MPs to carry out their parliamentary work.
A standard package of measures, recommended by security advisers and police, is available to all MPs.
MPs may also claim for enhanced measures that go above and beyond these, upon police recommendation.

It's a cynical and shameless land grab and they ought to be ashamed of themselves. Surely it would be wiser to ask questions about how unfit for purpose the Prevent initiative is? Something which seems to be unfairly profiling and targeting innocent people whilst letting dangerous people slip through the net.

Correct.

I'm sorry this will offend some people but I strongly get the impression MP's see their lives as being superior to ours.

An MP was murdered and the chamber is full.

There were 500 plus stabbings in the UK last year and I don’t remember the chamber being full. Nor was it full when discussing policies which impact the lives of many with legislation impacting livelihoods and health.

My brother was stabbed waiting for a bus in Moston years a go, we don't receive any special security budgets to continue our jobs.

It was tragic but let's not use this as an excuse to reduce accountability of MPs by reducing surgeries.

I hadn't really thought about this but a guy at work mentioned why the media keep categorising him as of "Somali descent", as if to dilute that he was born here or something.
