The barm is indeed correctly labelled.

The ones on the left look like the abominations that McDonald’s sell their breakfasts in.

A cake isn't bread, and bread isn't a cake. It seems, too, that the emporia you mention are either City Centre or 'southern' outlets. Get on a number 17 and the minute the bus is past Angel Meadow the driver will shout out 'Only muffins sold, all the way to Rochdale!

I’ve definitely noticed the geographical differences in the usage.

Salford, Trafford, Manchester city centre and it’s surround two mile radius, South Manchester and Stockport say barm or barmcake; from that two mile radius of the city centre north and then eastwards say muffin.
