This is what i alluded to in my post near the start of the thread.Possibly but I think the reality is that the individual virtuosity of guitarists is more important to fans of rock music than it is to other genres so a list like this likely to be dominated by rock guitarists.
To me the likes of Steve Cropper, Freddie Stone and Nile Rodgers should really be in any conversation about great guitarists but it depends what you are looking for out of the music. Different strokes for different folks, I might think Yngwie Malmsteen is the Alan Partridge of the guitar world but I'm pretty sure I'll be in the minority on this thread :-)
Im a guitarist myself and have played for about 30 years...and played in a number of bands to varying levels...but i find a lot of others focus on technical abilities and often discount the sound/feel of the musician.
David Gilmour has a very defined sound, a very very good guitarist....but you feel as much from the notes he doesnt play, than those he does....he's not "flash".
Johnny Marr...no virtuoso, but a clever guitarist with a unique original sound
Angus Young...for me the ultimate LIVE guitarist....admittedly a bit flashy at times, but its just all pentatonic blues scales, but again has really defined his sound
