Some big calls there but it does illustrate that there's such a range of talent to choose from. I'll be doing a very similar thing I think. Hopefully when the results are in people will share some of who they voted for and why without people getting arsey about it. Your list of absentees makes me intrigued to know who's in your list!

Think yours is the first mention of Zappa who I thought might pop up earlier. Not seen a mention of Duane Allman yet, mind boggles what he might have gone on to do had he not gone much too soon.

Possibly but I think the reality is that the individual virtuosity of guitarists is more important to fans of rock music than it is to other genres so a list like this likely to be dominated by rock guitarists.

To me the likes of Steve Cropper, Freddie Stone and Nile Rodgers should really be in any conversation about great guitarists but it depends what you are looking for out of the music. Different strokes for different folks, I might think Yngwie Malmsteen is the Alan Partridge of the guitar world but I'm pretty sure I'll be in the minority on this thread :-)

To be honest, I agree about Malmsteen, but the track, "Blue" is something else for me. Sent shivers down my spine the first time I heard it. I want it playing at my funeral...Even though I'm not really a fan of his music in general.

I think his playing suited defined The Smith's style, but from my limited exposure to his playing, he seems to play at the same tempo all the time.

I'm sure that's not the case, just the way it sounds to me.
