This is what i alluded to in my post near the start of the thread.
Im a guitarist myself and have played for about 30 years...and played in a number of bands to varying levels...but i find a lot of others focus on technical abilities and often discount the sound/feel of the musician.
David Gilmour has a very defined sound, a very very good guitarist....but you feel as much from the notes he doesnt play, than those he does....he's not "flash".
Johnny Marr...no virtuoso, but a clever guitarist with a unique original sound
Angus Young...for me the ultimate LIVE guitarist....admittedly a bit flashy at times, but its just all pentatonic blues scales, but again has really defined his sound
Nail on the head.
I should re-order my list to be honest because there were two guitarists that inspired me to pick up the guitar as an 11 year old and start playing. They would probably be in any top 20 list anyway (allowing wriggle room for the hard of hearing). The first is Clapton and Layla. That riff just gets me. The second is Santana and the way he allowed the lyrics and other instruments to "lead" and then just used the guitar almost to sing and back that up.
I don't play as much as I'd like but I was re-learning some Dave Gilmour solo's and for anyone who plays the instrument you perhaps give more credit to someone like him than a non-player. The sound he makes and the style he has, for such simple notes is staggering. It's all just basic notes but he just elevates it to another level. I love his composition. It's not flash like you say, it's just the right notes played perfectly.
Another that might not make many lists but is in my top 10 is Mark Knopfler. Again, only by trying to play Sultans of Swing do you see his brilliance. His fingerpicking technique and the way he does almost the opposite to Gilmour and plays the wrong notes but in perfect little licks which make them work.
Interested to see the results from this. I've probably muddled my list with those I think are technically best rather than my actual favourites - those that make me want to play.
I should add I haven't seen many/any shouts for Joe Satriani - not a huge fan of his music (although I like Chords of Life) but someone who taught many other guitarists who went on to arguably be even better than him.
