My House smells at night...

OP have you checked

1) Drains and manholes outside/next doors as well

2) Uncapped Soil stacks that may be venting around your lads bedroom, they could be inside or out
These are the first things to check

3) Is the house empty during the day,do you come home to find the smell already in the house

4) Does the smell start at the same time every night, how long will it last for

5) Is the smell just localized to the bedroom

Cheers for the feedback blues. Some more helpful than others. :)

1/Checked drains outside. All appear to be running clear. We do not share with next door as we are in a semi rural area.

2/ There are soil stacks around that area, but believe that they are capped.

3/ house is occupied during the day. My Mrs doesn't work and my mother in law lives with us too. She is disabled, hence living together. When i get in from work sometimes I can smell it about 6 pm, tho they cant as they have been in it.

4/ Never timed the start of the smell, but it does appear every evening. The utility room smells a little all day, but by about 5-6 its pretty mingin. When we go to bed about midnight the boys room smell really bad. Its like decomposing animals. He is asleep, so no point waking him and does n harm. He woke the other night and ended up sleeping in our room as he said "daddy the room smells really bad. Cant leave him aware in that situation.

5/ Smell used to be just utility room. Now smells in eve space above his room which we use for storage. This links to the boys room. The boys room now honks as the weather has got even warmer.

Ok,the drains seem to be clear
Just find out if your on the mains or a septic tank system as your in a rural area

If you have work done on the house, check the loft for any internal soil/breather pipes,it may have been missed if you had trouble with the builder
If you have had the problem for over 6 months,it's not likely to be any form of decaying animal, that kind of smell is strong but then dissipates out

If its non of the above, you are gonna have to start looking behind the radiators....good luck
