My new dog

What a happy chappy

Generally he is very happy. We've a bit of work to do on the socialisation side - I don't believe there is a drop of aggression in him but he gets unbelievably giddy at meeting new people and always tries to chase runners in the park. He had a bit of a chase with another collie in the park the other day but he came back and didn't appear too scared, which is a positive.

Yeah, if you can get the recall nailed then you're halfway there to a well behaved doggie. Good for you.

I tend to agree it took us ages to find a rescue Beagle mate for our other Beagle,
as we were constantly told by Dogs Trust the Beagles they had couldn’t go to a home with other dogs, which I found strange as Beagles are a pack dog.
I found that a bit strange too, their pack instinct is as strong as any of their other instincts, unless those particular dogs were not good with other dogs in general, I've known the odd snappy one, but even so, they generally tend to warm eventually and fit in quite easily.
Oddly, when we went to see our rescue Beagle, we had to take the Beagle with us (which was a nightmare in itself as he could never keep still, and it was a 120 mile round trip) to see how they got on, they ran around like idiots playing with each other, had a fight, got told off, stopped, then carried on running around like idiots playing with each other, after that they got on great pretty much their whole lives, the only issue we ever had was food, the rescue always trying to steal the others, but in my experience, any dog that's ever known what it's like to starve, that never really leaves them.

We have to be careful with our Zikos even with treats. Quite often when we're out another dog owner will go to give him a treat and their own dog will obviously try and get in on the act and, once given, that's Zikos's treat and you'd better keep your paws off it mate! He also never knowingly lets a discarded carrier bag go by without thorough investigation, you never know what hidden treasures can be found in one.
