When are people going to realise that Barry is not a holding midfielder? That's De Jong. At Villa he had the licence to get forward, and likewise at City, de Jong holds, while he roams his area of the pitch. Often getting out of position.

Barry is a CM, just so happens he's good in the tackle, but if you observe him he's far from that.

I don't see why you're worrying. Nasri would be like Milner playing for Barry, but better.

People always want to say that Nasri's best position is the centre, I disagree but for our system a ball carrier in the center is just what we need. Not to mention Nasri tracks back and likes to win balls back. Is he as solid in defense as Barry? No. Is he useless? Absolutely not.

That really does look fucking good! But if Tevez stays, he has to play and that would mean dropping Dzeko, or changing that formation.

1. Can anybody say with any certainty what Nasri's best position is?

2. Nasri, like Silva, plays best centrally in the hole linking the midfield and attack.

3. It will be impossible to accommodate all the best attackers at our disposal with Silva, Nasri, Yaya and de Jong all playing in the midfield.

4. I believe in the "players to fit the system" school of thought.

1. That's up for major debate. If you're not an Arsenal fan and all you do is watch MOTD you'll probably say the centre because he gets many touches on the ball and does lots of dribbles. He seems a bit more involved. That doesn't mean he's better there, however. Statistically speaking, he's been more productive out wide, and further up the pitch. One thing I've noticed too is he seems to have more energy to skin defenders when he's out wide because he exerts less energy. Thing though, is he's versatile, and that's the beauty because either way, he's going to contribute positively but in different ways depending on where he plays. From midfield he'll be involved a lot in the build up and making runs. From wide he'll focus more on beating his man and trying to get in the box. There's no one way we have to play Nasri. That's a daft thought really. Me, I think he's better out wide, but of course he prefers the centre we're he sees more of the ball. He's not going to be spraying balls all over the place from midfield, which is why I guess Arse fans don't rate him there, but he takes the ball places, and we could use that.

2 and 3. Silva doesn't play in any hole mate. Silva (watch more closely) is constantly moving in open space to receive the ball. Nasri could play in the centre, presumably alongside Yaya in Mancini's preferred 4321 formation. The centre doesn't mean smack dab straight in the middle. That's why there's right and left center mids which are slight offset. You make it seem like there won't be any room for them. That's a daft thought. There will be plenty of room and lot's of fluid interchanging in the buildup.

4. He fits the system. That's why he's being bought. Not as a backup, that's for certain.

I fucking feel like Dax.

Don't be surprised, to see something like this, because knowing Mancini since Inter, he would like play summat like this. Maybe you'll be happy since you wanted Nasri in the centre, yea?:

I'm not worrying, I've wanted Nasri to replace Barry from day 1. And I know Barry isn't solely a holding midfielder but when we get pressured he effectively becomes one, look at Arsenal away and Everton home (from Zonal Marking).

You can see that the position he is playing is similar in relative position to Rodwell and Song, whose roles in those positions are more holding than attack.

That's a nice formation you made and it's exactly what I hope to see. Nasri is good at winning the ball back, I think he would be fine playing centrally. How many goals would we theoretically leak? Impossible to say. We'd possess the ball more, that's for sure.

I suggest that we also burn all existing books and ban the publication of any more books ever again. You only need to read one book to know that all books are bad.

But you also have to consider that Yaya played AM last year. Now, yaya will be a deeper CM, which will help us to accommodate a Nasri, for example, in midfield without being hard pressed about defense.

And to put a new twist to things, when we get pressured, have you not noticed Yaya effectively becoming a holding midfielder this year, in the same manner as Barry in the formations you posted? We'll be fine, mate.

The benefits in attack will undoubtedly, imho of course, outweigh the loss in defensive solidity. (Which might I add with Aguero, Silva, Nasri, all being players that track back well, we'd win a lot of balls back which will help compensate as well. Whoops! Can't forget Tevez if he sticks around!)

Worst thing all last year was watching when we got bossed. That was awful, feeling relief at a goalless draw after getting torn a new one, or worse a collapse like Everton away or Wembley.

I really do agree with playing Nasri instead of Barry. Barry is good against certain types of teams but struggles mightily to make an impact against pacey, aggressive teams.

What a pathetic response.

Silva does play in hole, he didn't initially but recently Mancini has realised that when Silva has the ball we do wonderful things and has moved him into the middle in the gap between the midfield and attack. Although I do agree that he can pop up all over during the course of a game, but the majority of the time these days you'll see him receiving the ball in middle, more often than not from de Jong after he's done his business.

I like that formation, and I'll take your word for it if you say Nasri can play slightly deeper and in the middle alongside Yaya, however, it has one MAJOR flaw. No Carlos Tevez. Assuming Tevez stays (and I hope he does) he simply MUST play, he is too damn good not to. I would go something like this:

..................................Hart..................................

.................Kompany...............Lescott...................
Richards.......................................................Clichy

...................Yaya...................de Jong...................

..................................Silva.................................

.................Aguero....................Tevez...................
..................................Dzeko...............................

Of course, if Tevez goes then yes, drop an attacker and add Nasri.
