I'd have liked to see us go for a more experienced CB because in all likelihood we'll need him when either VInny or Lescott get injured and if it's a tough game they'll be no settling in period.

Why couldn't we just have signed Gary Cahill in January? He would have been perfect for us and an absolute snip at 7m. So frustrating.

City needs a reliable CB, someone you will not worry when you see his name in the line up.

Can this kid fill that role now ? Lets hope so.

I don't know why most on here are picking on Savic playing for us was a step up he made a couple of errors and paid dearly for it, but he is young and still learning. Rodwell made a mistake in his first game and also paid dearly for it so is everyone knocking him now. You need to be patient with younger players.

Whilst I dont agree that Savic is good enough to fit straight in to our team currently he still may benefit from an extended run in a lesser team.
Trouble is because of a few costly errors no-one is likely to take the risk.
Nastasic could well face similar problems as Savic if he doesn't play like Baresi or Maldini in his first handful of games.

This, this, and this again.

It's doubtful any young defender can be as gaffe-prone as Savic (and to be fair to the kid he was extremely unfortunate in that a lot of his mistakes were punished by costly goals) but it doesnt matter how good this Nastasic is he WILL make mistakes.

With this deal Mancini has held his held up and admitted he's made an error of judgement.
I think we should too and cut this lad a lot more slack than we did Savic.

Nobody expects a very young centre half to be perfect and of course they will all make some errors as even the experienced defenders do. The problem with Savic is that many couldn't see anything in his game that indicated that he had the potential to be even half decent. I'm not sure how much slack you expected Savic to get. He was given plenty of chances, was absolutely shit in pretty much every game he played (apart from the games where he had virtually nothing to do which were subsequently put up as evidence of his pending world class status by the terminally deluded) and I rarely heard people giving him a genuinely hard time at matches despite him costing us goals on a regular basis. If anything the people in the grounds near me seemed to pity him as he was so clearly out of his depth. Ok, people on here saw that he was absolutely shit and they said so, I'm not sure what is wrong with that. I'm certain Savic's shitness has had nothing to do with how City fans have treated him.

Like I said on here a few days ago, Savic will develop into a great player, but it may take a few more dodgy performances for that to happen. He should be loaned out to a middle table team, at least until January, rather than sold.

He will, in all likelihood, become a world class cb and be sold to Barcelona for 25 mil in a couple of years, so yeah, he wont come here, dont worry.

No he wont. I hope Kolo's driving him there with half a tank of petrol.

Want to wager that he will become world class in a few years ( say 2015 ) ? Loser gets a week ban from forum?

A week ban? Let me discuss this with my family first as this could be a life changer.

In all honesty we have seen zero evidence of this. He has made mistake after mistake and I for one haven't seen any good in him. Most of the fans have made their minds up about him and he looks nervous as hell every game he plays. From time to time it just doesn't work and this is one to scratch off. He might well become a good player but it won't be here. He needs a fresh start and we need to go in a different direction. By all accounts this Nastasic looks the business and we have Rekik too.

Good luck though, Stefan.

I've asked people this several times and never feel like I've had a satisfactory answer. What do you see in Savic that makes you think he will go on to be a great player? I honestly see nothing. He isn't quick, he isn't strong, he isn't particularly good in the air, he isn't particularly good on the ground and he doesn't seem to read the game particularly well. He has no mental strength and subsequently fell apart in some games having made huge errors. That to me is not a recipe for potential greatness.
I'm not saying it can't happen but the leaps he will have to make to achieve even mediocrity are substantial so to acheive greatness is going to be some task for the lad. I don't see how he can do it when he seemed scared witless at times by his situation. All players make mistakes but if you don't respond well to making mistakes then you're going to struggle imo. I doubt Baresi was world class at 21 but I doubt he was anywhere near as bad as Savic is currently.
