People are presuming its Stones that will move on -they are probably right but remember there have been links about Garcia to Barca.

For me as good as Garcia is on the ball he is far too slow to play in a high line even though he reads the game very well. This was exposed in the semi final in a foot race against Aubamayang most recently and would be by other teams as well.

The bigger quesion if this was true however is could Pep and the coaches get Stones back on track? We know there is an excellent footbaling centre half in there somewhere. His head has gone (for whatever reason) and the injuries have really set him back but with the injuries i think he can overcome them. He looks like he is one of those players that has a good level of natural fitness even though he has picked up injuries (or have they been an excuse for something else?)
I agree that somewhere inside Stones there is a great centre back but clearly his head is messed up.
Perhaps we can send him and Bernie to the same sports psychologists on a two for one deal and get them both sorted out.

In all fairness to Garcia he was perfectly positioned to play Aubamayang offside if I remember correctly, Mendy who could see straight across the line dropped too deep playing him onside. Hardly Garcia's fault.
He is a young player with great potential however already in his brief cameo’s the way he gets caught out of the line and lack of awareness of his link to the other centre half tells me he has quite a way to go.

oh absolutely Mendy was at fault in that sense.

You need to be able to out run the attacker to be in our defence.

Not sure I agree with this

He does not play left back in the same way at least as Zinchenko does Zinchenko could play CDM as he does for Ukraine Ake could not Zincheko started out further forward as like CAM Ake could not do that They have completely different abilities.

Unless we change formation I do not think Ake will play left back like Zincheko does

Took you two messages to make the same point. Ake is comfortable playing LB and DM in a similar way to how Zinchenko has, as well as being a good natural LCB.

we don’t need to sell them for a decent price, we just need to sell them.

Otamendi has been value for us, now he’s 32 and won’t fetch a good fee. The time to sell him was after the centurion season, we didn’t so I wouldn’t mind letting him go for free given his high wages.

Stones hasn’t been value but at least he’s younger and homegrown. We should be able to get £20m+.

Otamendi may yet have sale value, if included as part of a Torres team. I'd also think an italian team would go for him too.

I beg to differ. Laporte being the exception, all our other defenders; Walker, Stones and Mendy are equally if not more guilty than Garcia of that. Arsenal was the perfect example; Walker at fault for the first and Mendy for the second.

The more I think about it, the more I can see him playing left back for us.

He gave an interview three years ago saying his favourite position is midfield. With the way we often play we expect our fullbacks to drift in and sit at the base of midfield. It's also cost us a few times this season (most recently against Chelsea and Southampton) when our current left backs have been caught out on the ball.

He's also way quicker than Zinchenko and Mendy. Mendy's sprint speed is decent but it takes him about 40 yards to accelerate. Recovery speed on the defensive end has cost us goals the same way it did in Pep's first season and then with Delph.

Although Ake will never been as dominant in the air as bigger defenders, he's an immediate improvement on any fullback we have. Walker's okay on the defensive end but has never been a threat from set pieces whereas Ake attacks the ball well and has a good anticipation of rebounds. Lightyears ahead of Zin and Mendy in that regard.

The only concern I'd really have is in terms of crossing. It's something we've lacked with the likes of Delph and Zinchenko because neither are naturally inclined to overlap down the wing. On the other hand, even when Mendy's crossing is on point we've struggled to get anyone on the end of it and the likes of De Bruyne, Mahrez, Foden and hopefully Ferran Torres all have the ability to whip in a dangerous ball anyway.

I might be talking out of my arse and I'm not sure that it's a good idea to go into yet another season without a reliable, natural left back but I'm sure we'll see him there at some point.

Both broke. As a part exchange though, possibly to sweeten a deal for their players we are after.

Yes. I think many players will be going out as part of deals rather than for straight cash; either that or we are looking at deferred payments. It’s one of the reasons I mentioned in the Stones thread about the possibility of him going to Arsenal and us possibly having to take a player from there. Strange times may call for strange trades.
