Nathan Ake

I think he'd be an excellent signing. Knows the league so no time wasted trying to get him up to the pace of it. If Koulibaly signs and struggles to adapt (doubt he will), or Laporte is injured again then he's a quality option. He's also pretty quick and solid on the ball so could play left back if required. Laporte, Ferny, Otamendi, Stones, Garcia to Laporte, Ferny, Koulibaly, Ake, Garcia...much improved.

One of the things that Ake has is an innate defensive sense in the box. We all rave about forwards who can find space in the box and just happen to be in the right place at the right time when the ball arrives. What we appreciate less is the defensive equivalent, the defender who moves into space and closes it down for attackers, who throws his body into blocking positions, and who drops instinctively behind the keeper to clear off the line. Ake has that gift.

if two new signing come off and we go with Laporte, Koulibaly, Ake and Garcia as a squad four, with Stones and Otamendi sold, collectively generating enough cash to cover Ake, then I'll be happy. Ake's wages will probably be less than Stones as well.

We should have done it last season when Kompany left and Stones had been so injury prone. We ball's up last summer.

Great post!

Absolutely, but people have lost their heads because Ake plays for Bournemouth.
It's funny because the usual stick to beat Txiki up with is that we only go after £60m players..."why do we even have scouts", "why didn't we sign [player] BEFORE they were worth all this money", etc. And then as soon as we look to buy someone on the cheap from a relegated club he's not good enough, not better than what we have, cant be that good because he got relegated, etc. Guy can't win.

If Ake were to sign, presumably there'd be a game every now and again where he's paired with Laporte for whatever reason.

Who plays on the left out of the two?

Both, I would expect for rotation Ake would play with Koulibaly, Laporte with Garcia. Think he’d only play with Laporte if we were playing a three.

As did Kompany.

Neither. We play 3 CB's.

I mean, I get that. But I find the idea that there's no chance that they'd ever play together, not even once, odd.

Hypothetically, Ake and Laporte are the only two players who can play CB and are fit? Who goes on the left?

I'd probably say Ake. Guess though

I suppose if we had to we’d play the, both, don’t know which way round we’d go don’t know if either have ever played on the right before or which is the more two footed.

Stones out, Ake in makes us weaker.

You think signing a naturally left sided CB (note we only have 1 other, rather than the 3 other right sided CBs in the squad) that's versatile and offers us something different with his pace will make us weaker because our 5th choice, perpetually injured and mentally fried CB will leave?

We can cling to Stones coming good for as long as we want, but the simple fact is, in the 4 seasons he's been here, he hasn't been able to show a consistent run of form playing at his best level for an entire season. Why bother persisting with that?

You're also overlooking the fact that Ake isn't going to be the direct replacement for Stones, more so a second CB signing that will bolster our squad options whilst we also go out and bring in a starter to partner Laporte.

How many seasons did Bony do well in the PL?

How many seasons has Ake done well in the PL?

You realise Chelsea are interested in bringing him back as well?

Bony's pace turned out to be a problem for how we played and I don't think anyone expected him to fall off a cliff with his finishing like he did after he joined us. Oh and he could only play 1 position, and we had Nacho.

Ake has been a consistent PL performer and fits Pep's style very well and can play 3 key positions where we have depth problems.

If he was a better option than Stones then we would have already signed him. He isnt and never will be what we need.
