National Anthem - 'Britain or England'?

I see myself as Scottish & British, and personally I think England should have their own anthem and GSTQ should be kept for events where it is Britain that is being represented.

As for what some people are saying about nationalism, I think there is a difference between rivalry & nationalism.

I in no way "hate" or dislike the English & have many friends & family that are English, and obviously also support an English team. However, as far as "England" as a sporting entity are concerned, I want them to lose every game, and really hope they don't win the World Cup.

This is purely down to sporting rivalry in the same way that I would never want MUFC to win anything.

I don't want St George as my patron saint. He was from the Middle East originally - sod all to do with England.

As for Britain, well the jocks are too tight to spend anything aren't they so they're not going to give up English funding. The taffs are too busy shagging sheep to be bother (that or burning holiday homes) and the paddies are 'too tick' to notice what's going on around them.

I don't want Jerusalem as my national anthem either. What's a city thousands of miles away got to do with us?

I don't want the Union Jack as my flag either. I don't trust any unions and I never met anyone called jack who I like.

No, we should stick with the song about Her Maj - god belss ya ma'am - as she is what is English.

And another thing, I don't know anything about it, but it is wrong and it shold be stopped.

But Jerusalem is thousands of miles away! and it again is a religious bollocks song! This country has a huge Athiest and Secular population (science has shown that religion is bollocks for decades), therefore that should be reflected in it's national anthem!

We also have a sizable minority who think that their religion is "Jedi Knight". Do we have to sing about them too?

Jedi's are juat as ridiculous a notion to me as god is, so why not!!

Blimey they had names like George in the middle east, he must of been an odd 1 out

One from the sidelines here as I'm welsh.

I've always felt sorry for you English having that dreadful Imperialist dirge God Save the Queen and not having your own particular anthem.

IMHO Land of Hope and Glory comes out of the same crappy Imperialist drawer and is British rather than english .

Earlier posters noted Jerusalem.. a much more English anthem, without the miltaristic teutonic hubris of the firts two mentioned.

Good luck with any campaign to get it changed....

And names like John, Matthew, James, David, not to mention the typically Spanish name Jesus.

My take on this. I feel British rather than English. The whole St George's cross waving / talk about national anthems is, i feel, a relatively new thing which has only really picked up pace since Scottish and Welsh devolution. If you look at footage of the 1966 world cup final you will struggle to see a single St. Georges cross among all the Union Jack's. I certainly don't feel any different to those from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and regularly visit these places.

I think outside of sport it is entirely right that we don't go down the route of trying to re-enforce separate national identities by scrapping the British national anthem and bringing in an English national anthem. Sport is a different matter as the team is solely representing England and there is therefore a case for having an anthem solely for England. In fact, i'd like to see a United British team for football and other sports but that's a different matter entirely.

Couple of points

a) Jerusalem: try actually listening to the words then you might understand.

b) 'Her Maj' English ??? Don't make me laugh Their family name was Saxe-Coburg until they changed it around the time of the first world war due to anti german sentiment..

Anyway ...back to my sheep...national stereotypes don't just maintain themselves you know..!!

i dont like god save our queen, nothing about england and its hardly motivating singing about an old dear is it? land of hope and glory FTW
