A tiny vocal minority to be laughed at or a small vocal part of a larger quieter minority?

History would suggest we laugh at them at our peril, it doesn't take a particularly large party (or party within a party) of fanatics to exert hugely disproportionate impact on the democratic process especially if they are well organised and/or financed.

The story of recent political history here and in other parts of Europe is the 'centre right' being prepared to accept and normalise extremism in order to shore up it's political fortunes. It's abject failure to address the extreme right in their midsts risks taking us down the road to authoritarianism. Any person who considers themselves centre right but continues to support the current incarnation of the conservative party is burying their head in the sand and deluding themselves about the consequences of that support.

If kids came to her school without dinner money or parents could afford to pay for school dinners but didn't qualify for free then the school she was head mistress at separated those kids off at lunch time and humiliated them by making them eat in a designated area where she saw to it they were given restricted minimum rations - and the Tories hailed her as the best school Head in England !!
