The Southgate rule is for every half decent player with flair like grealish or foden, you have to play a pub team player like mount or dier alongside them

I do get this, and tbf even Pep and many others know you need at least one who can "control" the game in a more safe manner. (i.e. Gundo + Rodri)

However, if you play 3 centre midfielders you can put out 2 more designed to attack and one focused on defense.

I'd put Henderson/Rice deepest, Foden possibly next as a Mezzela of sorts because of his ability to make runs from deep (maybe the issue Soutgate is worried about if the ball is given away) and then Grealish as a no. 10-like playmaker who doesn't need to work as hard (fits who Grealish is anyway).

I'd absolutely try that out at some point, like say NOW, down 2-0.
