Netherlands General Election

Do people have genuinely concerns though, or do they reflect the concerns of the newspapers and grifters who hope they can profit over whipping up concerns about things that aren't really issues? I don't know the figures yet, but I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of voters voting for this anti-immigrant party will live in the places with the lowest number of immigrants (which has historically been the case in most countries). Which shows that it's absolutely nothing to do with their genuine day-to-day experience, and everything to do with politicians and the media creating an enemy or scapegoat for issues that these people really do have. It's the immigrants' fault that your rent/health insurance/food prices/energy prices/crime rates are so high. People had 'genuine concerns' about witches in the middle ages. Does that mean that those concerns should have been taken seriously? Well I guess if it was a democracy, it would have been important to. But it still doesn't mean those concerns weren't stupid.

We are back to it's the newspapers fault, witches as an analogy is a bit poor mainly because they didn't exist.

Of course witches existed. Ignoring their alleged magic powers, the women who were accused existed, they just weren't causing the problems they were accused of. A bit like immigrants nowadays.

As for the newspapers, it's no secret that plenty of people spend millions every year to influence public opinion on a whole host of issues. You're crazy if you think these people are spending that sort of money and having no influence whatsoever on anyone who doesn't already believe everything they say. Do you think GB News makes a profit?

Which works all ways left right centre etc...

People tend to believe who they want to believe. This forum is proof of that. People actively seek confirmation of their views.
If that's true, why are we all on here speaking to people we disagree with?

The thing about the political spectrum is that if you are truly a socialist politician then you act in the best interests of the people you serve. Clearly this is not true of right wing politicians who act in the narrow interests of a few.

Feel free to refute with examples.

People in 1933 Germany wanted to believe that they had lost WWI because of Jews and Communists.
It was utter bollocks, but it was what they wanted to hear.

Lots of people believed the UK would be like Camelot once we were out of the EU. It was utter bollocks, but it was what they wanted to hear.

A good 20%, maybe more, think immigration can be stopped by leaving the ECHR. It is utter bollocks, but it's what they want to hear.

A responsible government (of any colour) tells people what they ought to do, not what they can do. But we haven't had one for some time.
