Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini felt Emmanuel Adebayor was harshly sent off against Stoke - and the Blues boss reckoned that was the turning point in the FA Cup fifth round replay defeat.

City lost 3-1 after extra time at the Britannia Stadium. Craig Bellamy cancelled out Dave Kitson's goal with around 10 minutes of normal time remaining but shortly after the Welshman's strike Adebayor was sent off for catching Ryan Shawcross with his arm.

The game ended 1-1 after normal time, but Shawcross and Tuncay struck in added time to sink the Blues.

Mancini said: "For me, we will appeal, because it wasn't a red card. It was maybe a yellow, but not a sending-off.

"It is a normal reaction for a striker when a defender, all the game, pulls, pushes and kicks you. You should not be sent off for it.

"It changed the game because until that moment we had dominated the game, played well and had five or six chances to score.

"But when that happens, and you don't take the chances, something like this can happen to change the game.

"It was our best performance against Stoke out of the three games. They didn't have any chances for 70 minutes."

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini claimed he was not feeling any extra pressure after Stoke ended his hopes of silverware on Wednesday night.

Mancini's 10-man side were beaten 3-1 by the Potters after a fiery FA Cup fifth-round replay at the Britannia Stadium went into extra time.

The result left City to focus solely on their attempts to break into the Premier League top four and, after just two wins in eight, the heat is starting to be turned up on Mancini.

When asked if the pressure was increasing the Italian said: "No, no, absolutely not. I'm disappointed because we lost.

"We had a good chance to go to the next round and the final, but this is football, we must improve."

City will consider appealing against Emmanuel Adebayor's red card.

The big striker was sent off for the second time this season for flinging an arm into the throat of Ryan Shawcross.

Unless City appeal the red card, and risk having the suspension extended to four games, Adebayor will miss the Saturday lunchtime showdown at Stamford Bridge as well as trips to Sunderland and Fulham next month.

But the Blues were not happy with referee Steve Bennett's decision as Shawcross had a handful of Adebayor's shirt and the offence did not involve use of the elbow.

With Argentinian Carlos Tevez expected back in Manchester on Friday, the blow of losing Adebayor will be softened.

Mancini added: “My opinion is that we played very well.

“We dominated the game and had six or seven chances to score a goal before the sending off of Emmanuel.

“Football is strange. When you play well and have a lot of chances, if you don’t score something can change the game.

“Until that situation it was our best performance in the last three or four games.

“Manu (Adebayor) played very well, fantastic. For me - maximum yellow card. It was not so dangerous.”

City could use the tactic employed by neighbours United last month when they appealed against Rio Ferdinand's red card against Hull.

They lost the appeal and had a match added to the suspension but the delay caused by the appeal meant Ferdinand could play against City in the Carling Cup semi-final.
