Never meet your heroes.....

Two or three seasons back we were travelling from Edinburgh for a match at the Etihad. A group got on the train at Preston and were reminiscing about matches in the past.

The one doing most of the talking was a big blond Scottish guy. He was describing past matches he had played in for City and a goal he once scored. I was trying to work out who he was. His face did look familiar.

I did an online search on my phone to try and sort out who he was based on the snippets I overheard about which clubs he played for. It finally dawned on me who he was.

Colin Hendry. He had one of the most memorable faces in football back around 1995 when he won the title with Blackburn but age had not been kind to him.
Recent interview with him.

Bumped into Kolarov a couple of times weirdly. Top bloke and good for a laugh.

The thread started about Kinky, I met him outside a club in Wilmslow at a burger van, 2am and he was with Richard Wright then of Everton, I was with an Everton mate so he homed in on Wright whilst I made a fool of myself with Georgie. Pissed up I started chatting and asked him where he was playing at that time (some years after City), he said "i'm training with Man U" !.. I said "Georgie you wouldn't do that to us" and he laughed and said "no I'm training with Derby"! I then went on to humiliate myself even more by telling him my son had a a hamster called Georgie!

Met Brian "who" Horton at a urinal in the Guv's pub in Cheadle Hulme, had a good chat and he was a smashing bloke.

Met Andy Dibble at the Smithy in Cheadle Hulme, my son asked him to sign his shirt, it was just after his famous incident at Forest and I held his pint while he signed it, I had it in my hand like he was holding the ball when Gary Crosby (I think) took it off him, he took it well !!

And Peter Reid was great with my lad when we met him outside Maine Rd, loads of time for him, made my lads day!

Most amiable sportsman I ever spoke to was NZ cricketer Richard Hadlee, lovely bloke.

Taking about Peter Ried I met him in Jersey in 2001 when I was working there. We had gone to watch the cup final at a hotel bar with some scouse lads from work. I had my city shirt on in walks Reidy with Adrian Heath he came over and shook my hand. Couldn't believe it. A great afternoon on the ale followed both great blokes.

A few years ago, I left work early and on my way to get the bus home, I took the short cut through China Town. As I was walking down an alley some one came out of the rear of one of the buildings. It was Jim Rosenthal. Wonder where he had been....?
