Re: 87 years ago today....

I bet we won it fair and square as well.

Without dodgy penalties, cheating racists, a meglamaniac scotsman in charge or media bias from Pathe news.

Well done City !!

Re: 87 years ago today....

Well worth giving this book another plug!
I'm half way through it and it is fascinating and extremely well researched.
Not only is it match by match of the season with newspaper reviews and snippets of fan letters to the papers too (angry from Withington etc) but also gives all the scores and brief details from the other games going on to build up the reader into how the tables are panning out. One of the things I learnt was that Brentford were in the 1st Division on crowds of 30,000!
Well worth buying. And for 8 quid inc P&P you wont get a better book this year!

I've written a book about City's 1936/7 title winning season.

The book tells in detail, for the first time, the story of a historic season - City's first Division One league title. It's 283 pages, around 100,000 words and is illustrated with a smattering of black and white photographs and cigarette cards. To break up the text further there are plenty of statistics and tables.

The book is priced at £7.99 including postage and packing and is available direct from myself. If anyone is interested in buying a copy, please send me a pm or email: philipneale1937@gmail.com.

It is also available on Amazon (but works out slightly more due to amazon fees): <a class="postlink" href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Who-Said-City-Couldnt-Play/dp/0992727804/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386880377&sr=8-1&keywords=who+said+city+couldn%27t+play" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.amazon.co.uk/Who-Said-City-C ... n%27t+play</a>

Cheers,
Phil

If anyone would know about City not being able to play, it would be Phil Neal.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the Bluemooners who bought WSCCP. I've been chuffed will all the positive feedback and comments received.

I really enjoyed researching and writing the book, it was a pleasure - City won the league & United were relegated - bliss.

I can thoroughly recommend this book, and if any Blue wants my copy to read, please send me a pm and I will post it to you,if you pay postage on receipt.Don't want to give it to a charity shop as its a proper blue book and feel sure some other Blue would enjoy it.Phil hope you don't mind me offering it for free,it's a well researched story and well written, are you planning any more ?

Not at all Wembley76, glad you liked it! I've got a few ideas for another book which I'm currently researching, so yes there will be another book (eventually).

I bought the book and it is a fascinating glimpse of football back in the thirties, with names stirring memories of the dim and distant past. Nealy wrote me a nice covering letter with the book, which was delivered promptly.
However, could I respectfully suggest that some proof-reading be undertaken before publication of any further books? I see from the reproduction of the back cover (pictured several posts earlier) that Peter Doherty's name is spelt as "Docherty" (as in "Tommy"!). In the Arsenal v City game team line-ups, one City player's name (Bobby Marshall) and three Arsenal players' names (Leslie Compton, Jack Crayston & Ray Bowden) are mis-spelt. McLeod is often rendered as "McLoed". Players from a number of other teams also have their names incorrectly spelt.
I don't want to sound critical of a most interesting book, or like a pedantic nit-picker, but perhaps it's something worth considering, as it detracts from the real fascination of the book, leaves the work open to concerns about authenticity, and should not be too difficult to carry out.

I hope this is seen as constructive comment.

Thanks for your comments Big Swifty and I take them in the spirit given. I'm pleased you found it a fascinating read, despite the errors which you have identified above. I apologise for those and am sorry it detracted somewhat from your enjoyment of the book.

The initial print run for WSCCP was a small one and I know you have one of those copies. It was proof read, by a friend who did it as a favour and therein was my error. After that initial print run, the book has been professionally proof read and the problems you mention have been ironed out.

As for authenticity, I believe, the book sticks to the facts of the season in its entirety.

Best wishes,
Phil
