New Dr Who

The writting was shite and really meant what shpuld have been a good run from a decemt actress into a forgettable run.
Capaldi was by far one of the best doctors charactor wise, but was given amatuerish writing to work with in many episodes

Chibnall as show runner was a massive error, especially as every episode he wrote before the job wa given him was crap and lets be honest bar the first broadchurch his tv credits are dire

I agree about Capaldi.

Some of Chibnall's earlier fun ones were pretty good, he'd written about 10 or so I think. Not sure if any were just him.

I think he has a writer credit on all of his run - that's got to be a bad idea when combined with being showrunner.

wasn't a fan of the power of three, dinosaurs in space or the time of the doctor tbh, the silurian episode as ok, I think Moffat pre sho runner were better than when he took tge reigns the empty child/doctor dances, Blink and silence in the library were great.
maybe show running takes a toll on creativity.

I must admit is this rumoured Paul McGann 8th doctor spin off happens i would be interested to see it

Agreed on Moffat too!
Not heard of McGann's thing - sounds interesting though.

Am I right in thinking Sylvester McCoy’s Doctor was never seen regenerating? I was very young but I imagine the BBC just had enough of Doctor Who and pulled it.

No, he appeared at the start of the McGann TV movie.

It was Colin Baker who didn't film his regeneration, and I think McCoy played him with a bad wig.

I would love this for the inevitable compilation of Dr Who clips mixed with Withnail clips.

Imagine if they could get Richard E Grant in for a cameo!

It appeared to suffer from bad writing but I could only manage a few Jodie Whittaker episodes before tuning off.
Jodie was let down by bad writing and the BBC. Chibnall has some great ideas but didn't really put them into action properly. For example the timeless child arc would have worked had it been The Master.

Flux was supposed to be centered on Captain Jack but the BBC blacklisted Barrowman leading to the rushed rewrite of the majority of the plot.

I hadn't heard about the latter (Flux) but it shows a repeating problem with recent seasons - they keep going back to something that worked years beforehand with different Doctors. I've mentioned the endless incarnations of Rose Tyler, where RTD's sappiness turned whole seasons into Rose's show, not the Doctor's.

Barrowman's character was a Torchwood character and was just about okay in that world, but is better as a lead in a mad world, than a secondary lead who's an immortal character and who's already showed up as the Face of Bo... where's the threat? Flux was just a terrible mess by the end.

The Timeless Child thing might have been interesting but it didn't seem to have an endpoint to aim for. It just petered out in confusion.

Simm was a decent Master until he turned into a giggling idiot. I haven't liked any of the other recent Masters (apart from Jacobi!).

Chibnall slanted to please some of the fans as well. A minority gagging for a love story between The Doctor and Yasmin. He tried to RTD it and failed.

I suspect the three anniversary specials will be closing the show in this form with a lot of fanwanking and reverence.

Ncuti's first season has been described to me as "a mix of British Social commentary and Sci-fi."

One of the stories contains a Nigel Farage style politician.

After what RTD said about Davros I expect his reboot might be a bit "woke" for some.

Also he's having to cater for Disney. They way they've ruined Marvel makes me concerned the same fate will occur.

If Gatwa's Doctor is anything like his Sex Education character, this is going to be properly shit.

I have absolutely no doubt that Gatwa is a good enough actor to be a brilliant Doctor. But given that the other person linked with the role before Gatwa was Olly Alexander, it's hard not to assume that that Russell T Davies doesn't give a shit if the actor is a good fit for the role - it's pretty clear what the goal is. And given Davies' recent comments about Davros it looks like he's gone into full-blown power-mad 'I'm always right, fuck you' mode.

At the moment I have very strong reservations about what's to come - not because of Gatwa, but because Davies now seems to view the show as a vehicle to show off how clever he is instead of something he should try and make good.

I had no problem with what he said in essence and actually learned something interesting about the trope linking disability with evil.

But the way RTD has responded to polite fans just trying to engage with him about the topic is, in my view, totally unacceptable and completely indicative of a man who has been far too long without anyone questioning his views.

He doesn't seem to even be acknowledging that the disabled community is very much split about whether or not he made the right call - he's only interested in the half that agree with him.

Nor do I.

I never saw the character of Davros as disabled. I saw him as strong minded scientist who experimented on himself to create the Daleks.

I like a lot of his writing. I feel as though his ego has got the better of him. Bit like Tennant's doctor towards the end.

I think the Doctor/Yaz just ran into time constraints. It almost worked, and at least didn't get into the doe-eyed gazes that RTD turns things into. It could have done with Graham still being around - I didn't mind the John Bishop character, but I did have to look up who the other companion was!

I agree - I expect there to be drenching with sickly callbacks. Story not working? Chuck in another cameo, no, two cameos!

I've not seen much about next year, but if it is as you say, I'd be inclined to think that it will be "a mix of British Social commentary and Sci-fi as seen through RTD's lens." I doubt I'll recognise it as any more real than Coronation St!
Haven't they done a Farage-alike before?
I haven't seen the new actors in anything as far as I know, so I have an open mind about them.

The Davros being not in a dalek case is, I think unnecessary. If you want to do that, don't use Davros.
Certainly the urge to subvert/trash Classic Who is baffling (the episode when a dalek spliced himself with a human was baffling in the logic failure), and smacks of being clever-clever for the sake of it. Still, at least we get Bonnie Langford back as Mel, that'll help.

I'm looking forward to seeing her character again and how's she's developed over the years.

I'm guessing she took up Kate Stewart's offer of working for UNIT?

I've not seen what Davies has said re disability/evil, just got the gist - but yes, exactly what you say. Also as @MarsLlama says, his opinion of himself is impervious to any opinion but his. He's been like it since Dr Who restarted.

She did show up at the end of the last episode at the self-help meeting.
I don't recall anything about UNIT, but have an expectation that she'll be better far more tolerable than the original Mel incarnation.
