I'm with the majority and am really pissed off with this latest effort. I find some of Didsbury Daves comments quite patronizing at best towards people on here. If we don't like it we are entitled to post this opinion surely? As others have posted it's about building and maintain the clubs identity.

The following has been sent to the club, I urge other blues to do the same. As I said previously, Everton fans managed to effect change at their club, no reason why we can't.

To whom it may concern,

I would like to start by complimenting the club and your department over the last few years for engaging with the fans and listening to our views regarding the match day experience, stadium expansion, City Square, Etihad Campus, and general improvements throughout the club.

The regular questionnaires that you send out give the fans a voice, and while not everyone will share the same view, at least it gives the club an opportunity to hear the supporters opinion.

One area which I feel you have completely neglected to take the fan's view on board however, is the identity of the club.

As you point out on the website, you are the guardians of 130 years of history, and over those 130 years supporters have come to identify the club in a certain way. Firstly, the club is called Manchester City, secondly, it will always play within the boundaries of the City of Manchester, and thirdly, the team plays in blue and white.

So it is with great disappointment that I, and many other life long blues have today found out that next season the club will be playing without any white in the kit for the first time in our entire history.

I could never imagine Barcelona playing in an all blue kit. Or in an all red kit. Barcelona's identity is red and blue, so these two colours are always represented. Manchester City's identity is blue and white, yet next season we will play in all blue, with no white whatsoever. An identity that I, and many other supporters associate with Coventry City and not Manchester City.

Perhaps this was a decision made by Nike which the club had no say in? But if Nike proposed to change our name from Manchester City to something different, or demanded that the club move from it's home in Manchester to another city, would the club accept that?

I strongly urge you to send out a questionnaire to season ticket holders asking for fans view on this so that you can gauge the general opinion. Each supporter will have their own view of course, but given the choice, I would estimate less than 1% would choose to have no white included in the kit.

If less than 1% of fans were in favour of other changes at the club that you have proposed, would you go ahead with them?

From speaking with other City fans I know, and gauging reaction on fans forums, I would estimate the following:

100% of fans want us to wear sky blue shirts.

95% of supporters prefer us wearing white shorts.

There is a rather split view on the colour of socks, I would say roughly 45% prefer navy blue, 45% prefer sky blue, and 10% prefer white.

Given the question: Which colours should be represented in a Manchester City kit?
A. Blue and white B. Blue only. I would be stunned if more than 1% voted for B.

But please do not take my word for it, ask the fans.

I understand the need to change elements of the design of the kit each year for marketing purposes. But Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid etc have kit changes every year, but their core colours stay the same every season. Is Manchester City's identity not as important as those other clubs?

Could you imagine Manchester United playing in red shorts next season? If Nike suggested it, the club would instantly reject it, because they value the identity of the club. Unfortunately, we don't seem to have anyone that is mindful of this at Manchester City.

While I don't expect a reply, one would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Top drawer.

I love it. The melodrama. The indignation. The unabashed childishness. The absolute lack of self awareness.

Just like when you refused to renew your season ticket when your Italian hero got the bullet. You demanded answers of the board then, too, I remember, because it made me chortle. Not as much as this one, though, with its fawning united references.

Like the others I still think you're a United fan, rather than the daft blue you paint yourself to be, but part of me wishes you weren't, because you're fucking funny.

Carry on...

Bit harsh m8, maybe a personal problem best left to private messages rather then dilute a topic... Seems a genuine concerned blue to me but hay what do I know...

What's your opinion on the leaked kits DD??
And what about the rag rehash away kit we look to be getting ???

Some seem resigned to their fate of purchasing these regardless of quality. Luckily am in no such way shackled. I find them abhorrent and will be wearing the 10/11 version once again. Wonder if they take shit design into account when configuring the international sales numbers.

So, '09 it is, then, for next season AGAIN!

OR, maybe I'll treat myself to a '76 S/S Retro? At least I know THAT shirt is a REAL City shirt!!

Sky blue shorts.
very smart

Relatively speaking, that is revolting.

Obviously not that important in the grand scheme of things...

But that is a truly awful kit and I am very disappointed in the City team which approved such a horrid design.

Got to say after mulling it over for a bit that kit is fucking ghastly. The shield, the crappy collar and those blue shorts with something that appears to resemble duct tape running down the sides all come together to make one shite strip.

2/10 for effort Nike. Take a leaf out of Umbros book they knew how to design proper kits which represented our club properly.

Mind boggling that the club would approve of this appalling kit. Just proves they had no input from the fans.

The kits are fine? You can't get a true reflection of what they will look like through the lens of a camera phone

They're better than le coc sportif

Plus, if you're really unhappy it might cheer you up to wear an old one

Grown men getting this upset about a kit they haven't actually seen in real life? Get a grip lads.

What about an online petition and/or even a paper one for match days that could be presented to both the club and Nike. Even if it were just about the colours.
Whoever it was was absolutely right about never seeing utd in red shorts.

While it won't prevent me from sleeping at night, I agree that City's kits should always have at least an element of white in them. But this change to all sky/navy must be the result of a conscious new branding decision by the club. Sales of shorts and socks are so small as to be almost completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, which is why even the rags don't see any commercial benefit in making major changes to their shorts/socks every year.

Some of you make me laugh though, going off on mad indignant rants and then conceding that you and your kids will probably end up getting the new shirts anyway. If the people who are angriest about this change continue to buy the shirts every year then why should the club even begin listening to your opinions on the matter?

I'm glad our new kit looks horrendous. Saves me a fortune and I'm not tempted to hand over any of my hard-earned to Nike. Might go retro this season and break out the laser blue kit (if it still fits).

I don't wear football shirts mate, nothing against people that do but it's not my thing.

The reason I'm unhappy is because I see the identity and history of Manchester City as being blue and white. (Blue and White army, blue and white they go together...).

The fact white has been completely removed from the kit is not quite as bad as Cardiff changing from blue to red, but it's the same ball park. Would you suggest to their fans to simply carry on wearing the blue shirt if they didn't like the red?

This is about more than aesthetics, it's about history.

We all knew that when Umbro were replaced by Nike as the kit manufacturer that the design elements of the kit would suffer. To Umbro we were one of their higher profile clubs, alongside the England national side, and as such we benefited from a close working relationship. Who can forget the home shirt with the "soundwave" across the front? Ok, so personally I felt it was gimmicky and didn't much like it, but Umbro actually spent time and effort thinking that one through, they came down to the stadium and recorded the noise of the fans singing, they design a shirt which was absolutely unique to Manchester City. To Nike we are just one (and a not particularly important one) of many clubs they provide kits for, we aren't a priority, and as such the time, effort and thought process that goes into our kits will be far, far less. These new kits could belong to anyone, they just happen to have some, but not all, of the colours on them that are associated with Manchester City. There's nothing unique about them, I can guarantee you that there will be other, probably quite a few, clubs out there that Nike make kits for, that have the exact same design, just with a different scheme. I guess when you're trying to maximise your revenue you have to put certain things to one side, it's just a shame as Umbro and Manchester City seemed perfectly suited, Nike seem more like the kind of company the likes of Manchester United would cozy up to.
