New PL financial controls | Clubs agree squad spending cap 'in principle'

Except it won't be the same for everyone because if Burnley don't get bought out then they can't spend the same as us... and why should they? It sounds harsh but in a free market economy you don't drive investment and improve businesses (which is what clubs are these days) by limiting what they can and can't do with their own money...

Are Saudi going to invest in Burnley (or anyone else) after these new rules come in? I doubt it...
even if they get bought out ,they would still be restricted to 85% of their revenue

Am I missing something? Wouldn't they still have to comply with the 85% of turnover rule?
From what I understand the answer is yes, it's a bit of a canard (as they say in France) and we have no idea what level it will be set at, I suspect there will be a lot of horse trading going on, there is apparently the threat of legal action from an unnamed party and I think legal action would have a fair chance of success, I believe a compromise will be made and the level it is set at will be so high it will be meaningless but they can turn around and say at least we have it

The only way it makes any sense is if the squad cost % gets thrown out, then the smaller clubs can invest to be a middle club and the middle clubs can invest to be a top club. But that isn't happening, apparently. Who knows, though?

Yeah that ain't going to happen - if the PL truely want to stop clubs from self destructing financially then that's the 1 rule that has to stay.
It's no good saying to the bottom clubs they can spend 5x times the TV revenue of basically their own TV revenue without some safety net.

The constant rules and changes around FFP / Finance etc are getting tedious now - it's over the top interference from the PL and ruining football for most fans... instead of checking the forums and gossip columns for snippets of who we are signing in the summer we are now getting out calculators and trying to work out who we can afford... It's BS.

Why not scrap the spending caps altogether and if the PL want to help out lower teams then why not mandate that 50% of non domestic cup revenue get's split amongst the teams not in Europe?

so city get a 6 year old, train him for 13 years provide him with education then let him go for free? the cost of educating training plus god know what else , and we have to give him away for zilch ,

is this a clarkie
I think it’s tongue in cheek, suggesting that whatever we try next, the PL will implement another set of half baked rules.

That’s how I took it. I might be wrong, mind!

You would replace the 85% rule with some pro-active protection that actually works, like any forecast losses for the next year funded up front with equity, no new borrowings and protection of community assets.

But you are right it won't happen because this is nothing to do with increasing competition.

Only skimmed the new “cap” suggestion but it seems to me to be pretty much based on the American sports and keeping parity in the league. It’s fine in America as they want parity and also have a draft which also levels the field as the worst teams get better picks, their cap is mainly on wages and contracts. The Dallas Cowboys I think are the richest team in the world, but have not won a Super Bowl for 30plus years. The owners see having a team as a cash cow, the Washington Commanders (my team and who have been crap for years, just got sold for €6 billion!). Here it’s different as we have transfers, which they don’t really have (they can trade players but it’s around draft picks and picking up years on contracts). For me this is the worst thing I have ever seen when it comes to our national game, it will ruin the league’s European competitiveness and is the wrong way forward. It is also unfair on well run clubs with great business models like ours. Completely stupid!

Incredibly easily, you just grow central commercial deals, prize money and restructure TV payments. Get the bottom 3 an extra £10m and the top clubs can spend £45-60m a year more.

Yes. it's not that hard. It's supposedly going to be based on the centralised revenue, so the amount of money doesn't change no matter who actually finishes 20th.

You're getting it!

OH! So close. Can you name a single reason why teams being closer together financially would make the sport unompetitive?
Yep, easy, the standard of the PL will decrease, players will go elsewhere, the TV contracts, especially the foreign ones become less attractive and therefore pay less money. The TV revenues decrease so the bottom club will get less revenue and consequently the other clubs don’t have the ability to compete, talk about killing the Golden Goose.
