New striker?

Torres is at this point in his career a poacher. I hope his game develops... we'll see.
Calling him a poacher would suggest that he regularly puts it in the back of the net when presented with the chance. Which is what we need…

He isn’t a poacher though because he isn’t clinical enough. He’s no better than Jesus, Sterling or Mahrez in that department which still remains our Achilles heel.

He’s a better finisher than all 3.

Torres hasn't had time to build up much of a record, but if we want someone who puts the ball in the net more often than they miss:

Over the last three seasons in the league:

Ronaldo - 6.6 shots needed for every goal

Harry Kane - 5.4 shots per goal

Raheem Sterling - 4.8 shots per goal

--------------------------------------

Now given that includes Raheem's "poor season" last year, and that he doesn't take penalties, it makes me think we don't quite appreciate what we have.

I constantly see references to missed chances that a "true number 9" would put away, but the facts are that those true number 9s don't score with every touch of the ball.

Both Ronaldo and Kane take a lot more long shots than Sterling does, so you'd expect him to finish chances more often than them. I'm sure if we compared one-on-one finishes we'd see something different.

I'd be happy to agree with you if you can provide some stats to back it up.

Most people would (and this is entirely understandable, given the way they're talked about in the media) "expect" those players to be more clinical than Sterling, but that isn't the case.

And if you take out penalties, it's even more stark Kane's shots per goal shoots up to 6.3 and Ronaldo's Shots per goal shoots up to 8.7 - nearly double that of Sterling. If that's down to long shots I'd be very surprised.

Perfectly happy with Torres for this season. I’d like to see how he does.

And meanwhile id play delap in all of the domestic cup matches and make him a near-automatic sub in any league match with a three-goal margin or better (and maybe the occasional start once we have an insurmountable lead in the table!).

Will try and find things...

Ronaldo:

Kane:

Sterling:

These are a couple of seasons old and Sterling's is from early in the season, but it fits in with us trying to create good chances rather than shoot from anywhere. Ronaldo will shoot from anywhere bacause a) he's not bad at it and B) he's mostly bothered about himself, but even with those good at shooting, most long shots don't go in.

It doesn't give everything, but does in part back up what I'm saying.

Aguero was another player who took a lot of shots per game, just to add to the discussion.
