New UEFA coefficient rules are BS

Champions league, whole fucking point of the trophy

Mate I hate to break it to you but the 'Champions League' ceased being the Champions League the minute they started admitting teams who weren't Champions. This competition has historically always been organised with a bias towards the REAL champions of the domestic leagues, a reward for being the best in your home nation. The new coefficient rules are a wholesale departure from that.

-- Thu Oct 25, 2012 6:41 am --

Fulham probably have a higher coefficient than us...

The question is does winning the Europa League improve our coefficent rating?

I read somehwere if Atletico Madrid get into the Champs League then they would go straight into pot A becuasue of their European success.

So we have got to show a remarkable improvement in Europe for us to avoid the types of group City have been put in.

Just to bring this into perspective even further, by stark contrast this is the rags group:

2nd Place England
Champions of Romania
Champions of Turkey
3rd Place Portugal

And on what grounds did they get this group? Because they won it is a few years ago. The system is fucked, it is based on history, not the here and the now.

Do you not think? Real Madrid are bigger than the Rags. If anyone, they are the club that would be protected. Do you think theyre happy with this group? Nope, thought not, now move on.

But that's the other thing that fucks me off about it, it is a chicken and egg situation. How can one hope to elevate themselves and address their coefficient in the face of such brutal grouping?!

Basically, but you can get loads of points from Europa is what I was getting at look at the link to see

Good point and link. What I was trying to say is we have to improve our European performance in both competitions.

The performances could certainly have been better, but what do you expect when we're getting consistently lumped in the same group as the very best of the best Europe has to offer?! Are people honestly drawing no distinction between Cluj and Real Madrid? The rags would not get out of the group we're in right now, nor the group we had last year, same goes for Chelsea and Arsenal too.

Give a team a fighting chance, that's all I'm asking for. As existing Champions of England we shouldn't be facing teams like this until the knockout phase. Maybe one of those teams should be in the group, but not 3!

Any ranking system that is producing such grotesquely imbalanced groups is clearly wrong.
Chelsea, Arsenal and man u deserve better seeding than us, lets be honest here. For years they have been in the CL and collected wins and got their seedings up. Two of those are previous champions and arsenal by far has most wins in the CL of all the teams that hasnt won. Why does City deserve a better seeding? You have to prove yourself and you get better seeding. By going out twice in the group stages and moan about getting hard draws is laughable.

Agreed but I don't think our aim should be to get more coefficient points. It should be to be good enough to take enough points off teams in our group to get out of it, no matter who is in it. If we are not even in the top two in a group then we're miles off where we need to be.

I agree it's set up for the big boys, ridiculously so. Ideally what I'd like to see happen is more of the big boys getting dumped out in group stage. So you'd get the likes of Celtic vs Cluj in the knckout stages. That'd serve UEFA right. but then they'd probably change the rules again if that started to happen.

If I'm reading that right, Atletico got more points for winning Europa League last season than Chelsea got for winning Champions League? Is that because of more games, etc.?
