New UEFA coefficient rules are BS

I would just like to see the existing Champions of arguably the best league in the world get a seeding worthy of their status.

So we have got to show a remarkable improvement in Europe for us to avoid the types of group City have been put in.

Basically, but you can get loads of points from Europa is what I was getting at look at the link to see

If I'm reading that right, Atletico got more points for winning Europa League last season than Chelsea got for winning Champions League? Is that because of more games, etc.?

Maybe you get more points for the Super Cup?

As far as I can tell all these rules are designed to do is to ensure that the old guard (the Real Madrids, Barcelonas, Bayern Munichs, Manchester Uniteds and AC Milans) are ensured knockout qualification.

What kind of f****d up ranking system produces a group which has the actual Champions of 3 of the 4 best football leagues in the world?! It could only have been worse if we'd had the Italian champions as well.

How is a team supposed to improve their coefficient and elevate themselves given such logistics? It looks like we're now all but out of this year's CL at the first hurdle again, no doubt we can look forward to next year's CL draw (Barca, Juventus and Schalke I'm guessing) whilst the rags can easily maintain their coefficient against teams I have honestly never even heard of (Cluj?! wtf?!).
Just like all sports do. Seeding is seeding. It's the same in tennis and rugby and American sports. Why should football be any different? It's not a communist sport.

I have no complaints. We've been utterly outclassed in all three games so our coefficient and seeding shouldn't be any higher. It would be a grossly false representation of how good and big we are on the European stage. We're only seeded as we are because of the success of United, Chelsea and Liverpool and to a lesser extent Arsenal. If it weren't for these clubs we'd be seeded about 100th.

Plus if we were seeded higher it would be a mockery to the competition because to the Champions League we are what Swansea are to the Premier League...nobodies! and we're playing as such.

Why seed garbage Champions League teams higher up? From what I've seen this season and last in that comp we're nowhere near the top level, absolutely nowhere near.

Great post. And i will repeat again, if Uefa wanted to keep the top teams at the top. Real wouldn't be in this group.

Our group contains 2nd 5th 6th and 24th given current strength.

Unfortunately UEFA has its own ranking which is based on the last 5 years worth of only European results and as Dortmund haven't done well using that criteria alone, they end up in pot 4. It's a stupid system designed to keep historical giants in the competition as long as possible.

Now lets calm down about how we are not good enough for the CL. We have had 2 away games and faced a brilliant Dortmund at home. We will beat Ajax at home. The trouble is we are facing last 8 teams in the group stage. We've just been unlucky again. We aren't good enough to win it yet though Chelsea did and we finished miles ahead of them in the Prem so it's a weird competition.

We are easily a last 8 team given sensible seeding.

How are we last 8? We were clearly outclassed by Ajax tonight. If we topped a group and played them in the last 16 theyd beat us because we can't cope with a team full of fresh young fast players with great fast movement and quick passing and running ability. They're not a last 8 team. At the moment the level we are in Europe is about right. Europa Lg or Champions Lg group stage. From top to bottom we need greater experience as Manchester City (not what others have got as individuals in the past) to progress. It'll be two more years before we're last eight.

Well United were outclassed and beaten at Old Trafford by Ajax last season, beaten twice by Bilbao, and eliminated from the CL group stage by Basel and Benfica... should they be demoted down the rankings too as it seems they aren't a European power worthy of a high ranking anymore either, and need an even more ludicrously easy draw this season than last to go through (didn't breeze past Cluj and Braga either). Like FFP, the seeding system is protectionist in nature and an insurance policy for the likes of United, the established elite who UEFA prize so highly.

We went up in the rankings, we didn't get demoted.

Just like all sports. McIlroy's bird has never won a major, yet she was world no.1 for over a year in women's tennis because she gained ranking points over a sustained period. We've played nine Champions League matches. That's fewer than CFR Cluj or Bate Borisov.
