New York

Damn fine city. Only problem is, it's full of yanks.

THIS. My wife took me for my 40th. I spent half my time arguing the fuck with illiterate Yanks.

If you do go, Ellis Island is good. Rockerfeller is not as busy as the Empire State building and you can see just as much. Broadway shows are a rip off - wish we had taken in NFL, baseball or basketball instead.

Stayed in the Novotel just off Times Square in 2001 and had a great time. 2 nights might not be enough as you get there mid afternoon and so would have only one full day. Don't eat breakfast on the hotels as they were really expensive, but use the much cheaper diners on street corners. Only thing we found disappointing was the food, expected lots of choice but the yanks just seem to eat steak with no veg-very weird.

Just booked seven nights at the New Yorker with flights for £990 for two people. Loads of dates available.

Hope this helps!

We're thinking of a trip the last week of October (half term) for a couple of nights. The first site I've checked for packages is British Airways which I expected to be top end and wasn't disappointed, anything from £1500 per person all in. Can any of you cosmopolitan types point me in the direction of where we might get total cost down to a grand?

Is October a good time to go? Is there a bad time?

I went to NYC in October and it was great. Weather was nice, and central Park was beautiful. I highly recommend it. And you can catch a hockey game too.
