Newcastle (A) | Wed 27th Sept | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Same - aim this season is 4 leagues on the run and the world club champions to add to the Super cup and another good stab at the champions league.

I honestly think this time next year our team pic will show at least 3 trophies again.

Charity Shield / League / and one more!

If not, we can always just get a dog like Arsenal!

First half was pretty good. My takings from the game:

- Bobb is ready to make cameos, pick up some experience with the big names but he's already really comfortable.
- Nunez and Doku are really good, ball carrying is on another level there.
- Gvardiol is starting to understand the passes required to break lines.
- Didn't expect Phillips to boss the game, but at the very least he shouldn't be shying away. At times it looks like he moves into positions purposefully to NOT be available. In other teams this is to drag someone out of position, but in the 6 you need to be the free man. Sadly, i don't think he will ever make it here.
- Grealish really struggled, nothing came off at all for him. I think he will be fine, my only worry for him is Doku is really impacting games on the left.
he doing if for 3 years in a row I guess, last night he played for the first time on CB postion for City

Random thoughts

Kovacic and Grealish being back and getting minutes in their legs was the biggest positive for us.

Nobody got injured

It was a competition we simply couldnt win this season with the World Club Cup scheduled in Dec at the same time as the QF, so diving out immediately isnt the worst thing. Plus playing the next rnd at United wouldve meant 2 derbys at Old Trafford in the space of 4 days, and likely a half-arsed team selection from Pep - no thanks

In a game where we were 1 down Pep played the last 20 mins with no recognised striker on the pitch, and Erling sat with a blanket on his knees. That alone tells you how much he wanted to chase the game.

Would love Kalvin to succeed but he simply doesnt have the range of passing we need to play in the pivot role in our system - in his defence few do - but he just doesnt move the ball quick enough, or have the range that Rodri has and Ferna did.

Sergio Gomez simply isnt good enough and never will be. Nice chap Im sure but he needs shifting on in Jan when the new Argentinian left back allegedly arrives.

Am I right in thinking that we'd be playing the scum away next round if we'd of won last night. And if that game would of been the day before the fifa club cup then what team could Pep of played ? The EDS! So I'd of rather gone out last night rather than give them cunts another bye like we did about 5 or 6 years ago. I really hope the geordies play a first team and smash the vile bastards.

Impressed with Bobb. He can make it at City, even if after a loan at a good club. His ball control is special.

Doing for RBL and doing it for City are two different things. The movements in front require different passing through half spaces, but he's picked it up almost immediately. Laporte understood the tempo the best, but i think Josko will surpass him.

glad we went out, to much of a pile up as we know. Just done the super cup, got the world cup soon. If we are to go to wembley in the UCL final and win the prem it would be to much to start hoping for a league cup win. Avoided yet another derby as it turns out as well, feels like we play rags every month !

as for how the game went, the first half was unbelievable, our passing and movement as good as any game, we totally controlled things apart from the near give away towards end of half. Newcastle embarrassingly could not get the ball, was a good run out for some fringe players, Kovacic was my MOTM and good to see him back. We lacked that final ball in the box, had phil or haaland been in it would have been different. But a top first half show for me from us.

second half we kept giving the ball away, looked complacent and Newcastle rushed in to score. After that what a shit game, awful. Ball was out of play, players down injured, taking time on throwing's. Was as bad as first game in second half. Sorry geordies but if that your hope for the season i sympathise.

No, it’s the next but one round that clashes with the FIFA thing
