Newcastle (A) | Wed 27th Sept | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

From a Newcastle POV it looked very much like two second strings in the first half and then we brought on two players who arguably the most important to the way we play and you didn't. We upped our intensity, our aggression and our ambition.

It felt huge because of the team we put out in the first half (Midfield was both young and inexperienced, defence had Lascelles and Paul Dummett in it.) and that team beat 'Man City'. I know I kind of ignored the fact that it was a Man City side without De Bruyne, Haaland, Rodri, et al.

It also meant we'd knocked out the very best side in the competition which we hoped would mean an easier route to the final. Of course then we get drawn away to Man Utd (who apparently have had 12 home consecutive home draws in the League Cup? Chances of that happening randomly are 0.02%). Of the 30 possible draws, this has to be the 3rd hardest. I guess we can look forward to Liverpool or Arsenal if we do manage to put away your neighbours.

Anyway, I hope everyone who made it to Newcastle had a good time regardless of the result.
Could you ask your lot to put their foot in against The Rags too and venture out of your own half? You generally roll over and have your tummy tickled by them.

The main plus points were , no injuries , Grealish & Kovacic got some fitness and Bobb & Lewis continued there development also Gomez looked a different player further up the pitch, should we really be surprised how the media have taken this opportunity to take the piss though ? We obliterated English & European football last season and they have been praying for a morsel of redemption , quite sure we will be just as annoying to all and sundry by the end of the season , a couple of more trophies in the bag and the World Club Cup to add to the Champs league , Premier league , FA Cup & Supercup already in the trophy cabinet.
Losing at Newcastle in a third rate trophy is quite palatable and the headlines easily ignored , hope the Barcodes enjoy their day in the sun and the hero worship , they dont get many.
Good post. I feel a bit better than I did last night after the result, I think it was a mixture of things that got my back up as well as losing the match rather than being out of the League Cup.

I was going to say Pep and City have made a balls up in letting players go and having a small squad this season.
Even selling Palmer and loaning out Doyle. Mcatee. But the truth is Manchester City are on another planet and the fact is the League Cup brings us nothing in terms of Glory anymore

I don't, actually feeling even worse after listening to the first five minutes of drivel on tS, another bullshit about us being smashed as the best way to beat us, get into our faces, us being out being good for the game, etc.

They brought Bruno G, and Gordon on at halftime moving Joelinton into midfield with Bruno and Tonali leaving Isak, Gordon, and Murphy up front. That's a Prem front 6 for them. We had Gomez (who did a decent job), Phillips, and a tiring Kova just back as our midfield 3. And they managed a scrap goal when for whatever reason Rico left a shit ball roll past him to the back post. What would anyone expect. Someone, please give me a fucking break.

How's this for a line up:

Ederson

Walker Stones Dias

Rodri Nunes

KDB Foden

Bernardo Haaland Doku

That would be one version of the best team on the planet, which we are by some distance.

BTW, what does everyone in that line up have in common regarding today's match.
im still right Akanji moaned after first push at start of second half and lost his control the a few tackles flew in and momentum shifted instead of us slowing game down and passing we played into their hands and the Prem front 6 created what 1 more chance

Not, you're not alone. I've always respected the League Cup, I've always thought it was a worthwhile trophy. Furthermore, if you look at who wins it, year in, year out, well, it's not the minnows. So that says something, doesn't it?
I'm disappointed, but we played at least one good half of football. And it would have intensely irritated me to go out at the quarter-final stage if we had to play the lads of the EDS.

If we had been injury and suspension free, we would have had JS, KDB, BS, and Rodders.
Winning the four can be done, but it will also coincide with us having replaced Cancelo and a couple more youth players as good, or better than Oscar & Rico coming through.
Either way good luck to the barcodes.
