Newcastle (H) post match thread

Difficult to really assess us. We cruise against a poor side
(WBA excepted) but cant see us putting 2 and 3 past a decent side. Yes we all know the defence is top notch now but that wont always get us to where we need to be. That said losing David Silva was like losing 2 players and Sane is also a big miss so no coincidence the forward play is not as it was and the goals are not flowing as they were.
I think last year, and earlier this season we might have been sucker-punched by this lot (again).

I don't agree about the defence though, sorry! :) I honestly think Pep is making the defence stronger to give us a better chance of winning the Champions League. Of course, it's at the expense of beating teams like Newcastle 6-0 etc but it has to be done.

I genuinely think the key to the Champions League is having a defence that we can rely on to defend a 1-0 lead. We know we can't expect to go to places like Liverpool, Monaco, Spurs, Lille etc and have to score 3 goals - it's just not what the top European teams do. I don't think we will win the league this year, but I've more confidence in winning the CL than ever. Teams like Porto, Athletico, Chelsea, Inter etc have always won it by stopping their opponents rather than out-scoring them.

When we play united in the Carabao Cup, they now have a problem - how can they break down a defence now that doesn't concede cheap goals with a lob over the top? They aren't now going to be able to play the same game as they aren't sure if we are going to sit tight and win 1-0, or if we're going to let rip. How can you pick a team against that?

I do agree that losing the greatest player in our history - David Silva - has hurt us though. He is irreplaceable not just in skill, but in attitude. I think we have to trust Pep though to get it right. I think in time he will.

Solid and steady, that'll do. You don't evolve into title challengers overnight from where we were. They never had a sniff to be fair, and I think Gundogan showed again why pep rates him, he really gets us ticking when he shows for the ball. Sterling was excellent, very positive, cancelo is ideal for games like this and Torres on the scoresheet again despite maybe struggling in that striker position.

Some food for thought, kev was less effective today and Bernardo struggled on the right first half. Swap them? Ok it limits Kev's impact centrally but he can swing in killers balls from the right all night, and I still remember Bernardo destroying us for Monaco through the middle.

Slight worries over Gundo and cancelo pulling up late on, would have liked to have seen Palmer and Foden on at 80 but Aguero looks better again and hasn't lost that talent or desire.

So predictable that we get yellows for one foul and they get a yellow maybe after five or six. Carroll's elbow was poor, maybe not malicious but not clever play and was one of many which went unpunished. Seems it's still ok to go on hard on pep's city because being oil rich and good at football, we deserve it.

it really pisses me off that the likes of Carrol dish out elbows no booking but Cancelo one foul & booked. We must get more soft bookings than any other team.
Cancelo is the future. Gundy great again. Kun now available which is v important
He is one horrible cnut Andy Carroll, shouldn't say this but I hope he get hurt he is a fucking menace & embarrassment to the game

I wouldnt mind if he was horrible but could play
The big useless donkey cant even start before Joelinton who has to be the worst forward I've ever seen?

Found it all a bit frustrating. Hopefully we’re looking at the bigger picture and saving ourselves for a busy schedule of tricky games

thought Kev was poor and when he isn’t his usual self we tend to be flat going forward

Still a bit too ponderous and slow first half , although better than against West Bring. Second half better and nice to see players like Some driving forward with the ball. Finishing simply must improve. KDB missed a sitter

Sergio looking sharper bit by bit.
Slow progress im afraid, Pep knows he's on last chance saloon with Sergio.
Another injury from probably his final swansong
Would love him to get another 30 minutes in both Everton & Chelsea game going into the January set of favourable fixtures.

Win both Everton & Chelsea the rest could be the run we need to get back in the race
Lose both or 1 & then into the Derby can knock us for 6 but win both League games then go into the semi with massive confide

UTD Semi
Birmingham FA Cup
Brighton
Pallace
West Brom
Sheffield UTD
Burnley

Am I alone in thinking, with the resources we have, we should blitz the league, the cups and everything in between?
