Newcastle Thread - 2023/24

The thing about Newcastle since the takeover is they have to look and learn and compare their growth / development against City's from 2008. City are the only peer they have to follow.

Firstly City took 3 seasons to win a trophy and also to qualify for the Champions League. During that time, City bought two sides - the first to get us to have us properly challenge to win a trophy / CL spot and then the second team to take us to the next level. So Bellemy, Robinho, Adeybayor, Bridge, Jovetic paved the way for Aguero, Yaya, Silva, Barry etc. Newcastle are still in their ''first side'' phase yet to their credit, in ''year two'', although they haven't won a trophy, they are a year ahead of City in qualifying for the CL. City only missed out right at the end for a CL spot in 2010 when losing 1-0 to Spurs in a ''CL play off game'' and although there was disappointment at the time, it was a blessing in disguise, it was too early, as Newcastle are finding out now. City failed in the first two seasons of CL group stage, finishing 3rd the first season and woefully finishing last in the 2nd. I don't think we won a game! Yet from the 3rd season onwards we have gone beyond the group stages every season

Secondly there is the manager. City's takeover inherited Mark Hughes and were very patient with him for 16 months before taking action and bringing in Mancini. Newcastle's new owners brought in Eddie Howe and clearly he has done well, but like Hughes, he isn't the man to take them to the next level as Mancini did after Hughes. The question is how long will the owners give Howe? Unlike Hughes, Howe is popular with fans and may well bring a trophy home in the League Cup this season, but that (in my opinion) would be bad for Newcastle long term because it will keep Howe in the job longer and he isn't the man to lead a serious PL or CL challenge.
I’m puzzled at the conclusion that Howe is not good enough to take them further which several people have expressed. Why do you think that? (He is certainly better than Hughes).

Can't be confronting your own fans like that!

It's a long and expensive journey from Newcastle to Bournemouth, and right or wrong, they should be able to voice their opinion.

Rocky road to go down that Kieran!
I'll take 10 of him every day of the week rather than the insincere badge kissing desultory clapping twats you see most of the time.

Conte.

He's a **** but give him the money and he'll move them to regular CL qualifications and potential title winners.
I agree with you. It's a project that could interest him, also because Conte showed in career to succeed well when having non first-level material: the first title in Italy with Juventus or Italy at Euro 2016, probably the weakest national team we've had.

But I strongly don't think, despite Arabian funds, Newcastle needs to buy expensive players. They need, first of all, to create a backbone with a sense of belongingness, ductility, making a player trading with rationality according to their real and not alleged needs, covering the positions in which they lack, in few words not to buy being attracted by renowned names. They had better operate step by step. In few words not collecting a sticker album.

Newcastle found out last night what we used to find out anytime we looked like upsetting the big boys.
It's strange just how quickly the Var bloke has been stood down.
To our Geordie posters I'll simply say just do the job in the last game and show the bent fucks you are here to stay.

One of our first away games at Bayern a 100% pen never given

Yeah, there are certain teams that Uefa are desperate to have in the knockout stages - Rags, Dippers, Barca, Real, Inter, PSG and another half dozen or so who are unlikely to get much further than being game fodder for Uefa's annointed.

The penalty decision last night (which I've only just seen) reminds me of every dumb decision we've seen over the years, beginning with the one given against Micah in the league cup at Anfield, through the fouls on David Silva and Micah (again!) in Munich and countless others. These were before the days of VAR, before the days of immediate reaction and I don't know whether the refs in those were fit to ref a world cup and a CL final but the ref last night dropped a real clanger. Of three conditions to be met to award a penalty he thought one had been met - the hand was in an "unnatural" position when he saw the replay! He considered that this nullified the fact that the contact with the hand was not deliberate or that the player was too close to get out of the way! In other words - "I'm under such pressure that I'll let someone get away with something that I'd better penalise ball to hand, like they did with Jack Grealish in the FA cup final. I can't tell my VAR colleague not to be so bloody stupid. After all he's UEFA's spy in the cab. And when you think of the two clubs involved ... One well in with UEFA... the other rich..."

The geordies must be furious and with every reason. They're being cheated just as we were for so long.

I was going to feel sorry for them being ripped off by a blatantly bent decision then I remembered that twat on youtube, the real geordie?? After his comments about City over the years I quickly change my mind. Ha Ha!! Now you know how City are treated!!!

What's got into the TV companies? I thought Newcastle games kicking off at 4.30 on a Sunday or at 8.00 on a week night were to be televised if they were away, preferably on the south coast or in London. This is the second time they have been allowed an 8.00pm kick off on a Saturday, and this one is at home!
