Question for anyone who understands sports science etc....

With Newcastle having so many injuries this season, is that down to bad training schedule etc? If so, should there not be some sort of internal investigation into what's going wrong

I’m puzzled at the conclusion that Howe is not good enough to take them further which several people have expressed. Why do you think that? (He is certainly better than Hughes).
I’ve been wondering that, too.

Howe still has done nothing to suggest he is not up to the task.

Just because he spent several seasons keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League, it doesn’t mean he’s not a top-level manager.

On the contrary, considering the budget he had at Dean Court, I think he did a remarkable job.

The penalty decision last night (which I've only just seen) reminds me of every dumb decision we've seen over the years, beginning with the one given against Micah in the league cup at Anfield, through the fouls on David Silva and Micah (again!) in Munich and countless others. These were before the days of VAR, before the days of immediate reaction and I don't know whether the refs in those were fit to ref a world cup and a CL final but the ref last night dropped a real clanger. Of three conditions to be met to award a penalty he thought one had been met - the hand was in an "unnatural" position when he saw the replay! He considered that this nullified the fact that the contact with the hand was not deliberate or that the player was too close to get out of the way! In other words - "I'm under such pressure that I'll let someone get away with something that I'd better penalise ball to hand, like they did with Jack Grealish in the FA cup final. I can't tell my VAR colleague not to be so bloody stupid. After all he's UEFA's spy in the cab. And when you think of the two clubs involved ... One well in with UEFA... the other rich..."

The geordies must be furious and with every reason. They're being cheated just as we were for so long.
Thing is as we have been the meeja whipping boys..as our club has always been pretty weak at fighting anything outside of the match itself (not a bad thing - but sometimes frustrated). Dippers and Spuds regularly used to have an extra goal or decision in them against us.... we were pretty much hampered. I notice today despite a poor Newcastle display its almost a pity commentary - whereas they salivate when we failed..they even keep going on about the away allocation when almost EVERY team sells their lot...its bizarre

Also like it or not, the PL ffp will bring possibly 7 / 8 teams in with a good chance each year...maybe a salary cap as the yank owning cartel will push for it if they cant get their way with banning relegation!! I do think a trf and salary cap will be a good idea - regardless of earnings - just straight forward competition with best team winning - probably have cycles of new teams every 3 years....will sell loads of subs globally if that happened tbf. For Newcastle though, unless they use the loan thing really well they will be one of the 20 all owned y billionaires, states, huge global investment and financial institutions - everyone on an equal footing

The problem with a salary cap is that, if you set it high enough for it not to reduce the attractiveness of the PL to European players, it is meaningless. Set it lower and risk an exodus. (See women’s game.)

It could be.

Didn't people used to say Dortmund players always seem to get injured?

Erling was meant to be injury prone when he joined us and also though this may sound stupid because he's injured now, he only missed two or three league games last season. Other players have left Dortmund that had regular injuries and seemingly have a better injury record once they left.

So there might be something to it with Newcastle, or they just went through an unlucky spell.

Well I hope Newcastle have enjoyed their spell in the Champions League because I can't see them getting back in next season

womens game salaries is due to lack of attendence..Utd v Spurs on now...three and half empty stands...one game sold well yesterday at £10 txt..Arsenal v Chelsea but its a business not a charity - you can't pay out more then you generate

Sleeping giant
deserve to be in europe

ffs, sometimes I think these deluded geordies would be worse (or at least as bad) as the arse and red scouse fans if they actually become successful and start wining trophies.

There's also the issue of when you're not an absolute elite team, you have to make compromises with your signings. One of those compromises might be that you sign great players who are a bit injury prone. I'm convinced, for example, that if Kompany didn't get injured so often, a Real Madrid or Chelsea would have come in for him long before we became a title winning team.

I was hoping Newcastle would get through but it isn't a huge shock they're out. A lack of experience and a lot of injuries combined with a tough group. A shame for them but they can focus on the league now which isn't a bad thing.

The atmosphere was flat as a pancake when Milan equalised. Always a lot of hype about the noise at St James but when that goal went in the fans checked out.

Interesting to see where they go from here. In 2010/11, 2 years after the takeover, we spent £183m on the likes of Dzeko and Yaya, next tier signings. The following year we signed Aguero to push on and incurred significant losses. We have had CL income ever since. That was pre-FFP.

Newcastle don't have that luxury. FFP is doing its job and restricting their investment to progress to the next stage. Early elimination won't have helped and failure to qualify this season will really set them back.

Part of me says, they voted for it so fuck 'em. But another part of me hates to see cheats prosper which, of course, they will if FFP achieves its objective to guarantee CL entry to united, arsenal and liverpool (oh, and Spurs)

Newcastle are knackered. Their efforts over the last season and a half have caught up with them. Better not being in Europe I suspect.
Think injuries to a squad that was pretty thin in the first place is one of the main contributing factors myself.. Newcastle’s full hit on the park is capable of beating nearly everyone especially at St James Park.
