Every player from the first team squad that is fit and available will travel up to Newcastle today and will either play or be on the bench.

I don't think people are preparing themselves for the *much* more rotated side we'll field tomorrow. Alvarez? Grealish & kovacic starting? Akanji? Doku? You're in for a rude awakening.

My guess is more in line with

ortega
lewis
baptiste/other academy lad
gvardiol
gomez
phillips
nunes
academy lad
bobb
academy lad
academy lad

I think it will be somewhere in the middle between your team and the team you quoted. I think you've nailed the certain starters but I'd add Grealish to it for the minutes after injury. kovacic will either start and play 45-60 minutes if hes ready to go or come on second half if hes not quite there yet and doku will probably play as one of the new lads still finding his feet. The gaps after that to be filled with eds debutants.

Newcastle will be focusing on the CL the last thing they want is a tough game tomorrow.

Newcastle will know the league cup is their best chance of winning silverware this season, The Champions League is far too early for them and getting into the Europa League will be the best chance in europe this season

Newcastle will play their best 11 and want the League cup, City on the other hand have the World Club trophy and will play a young team with 3 or 4 first team players

I hope Phillips has a good game, same at Wolves & Arsenal, and makes himself safe from the chop and a transfer in January. Too many ready to moan about him if he so much as makes a less than perfect pass.

Did we have a game in the last year or two where we went really, really light on traditional starters? Just curious if there is any precedent for this?

Newcastle need to qualify from the group stages of the CL it helps their coefficient and ffp to move forward and progress this is where their priority lies . They have the toughest of groups aswell not a chance they go full strength tomorrow in the carabao imho

I think Newcastle will rotate, but they tend to anyway. They've got a fairly big squad with a couple of options in every position. The fans will want to win something, anything, but the board will undoubtedly want the team to stay in the CL for as long as possible to boost revenue and exposure and qualify for it again next season. The more money they make, the more they can re-invest to push for the big competitions.

With the injuries we have it's going to be a tough game, but it will be a great game for the fringe players to get fitness and show their ability. I want to win it, but I wont be too bothered if we go out either - just means a bit of rest we wouldn't otherwise have which is a good thing when we've got the club world cup as well this season.
