Because they are absolutely desperate.
Iam starting to smell smoke and mirrors here.
We know better than anyone you have to throw money around when you gatecrash the head table but they are bluffing there hands here. The players they are signing/Linked with won’t even keep them up let alone start a revolution. I would love it just love it if these owners turned out another Micheal Knighton.

Our first January transfer, we got Shay Given, Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bridge and Nigel De Jong. I reckon that's quite a bit better than what they've got so far, although there's a bit of a parallel with Bridge and Trippier. Obviously they're in the sort of position that makes it hard to bring in good players.
Very true and we had a far better window then, compared seemingly to how theirs is now. They are bringing in players of a calibre that show where they are in the league.

chris fucking wood… £25mil… haha absolute joke… mitrovic, barnes, pukki, carroll, cheaper and better……

Not in the Premier league he isn't. Fantastic finishing ability but very underpaced and his hold-up ability has been found out at premier league level.

None of them are better.

People need to stop looking at their signings and comparing them to the frankly preposterous media claims about them going for mbappe etc. We know as much as anybody how much the media will bullshit for a story. They need a Striker, (amongst many others) bringing in somebody from abroad is a risk as there's no guarantees they won't need 6 months to settle, by which time they'll be down so they have to bring in Premier league proven players. Teams aren't overly willing to lose players in January at the best of times, that applies moreso now with covid meaning teams full squads are needed and its especially true when that team is a rival for the drop.

Wood has consistently got double figures for a Burnley side that's punching well above their weight, a 1 in 3 striker for a team like Burnley isn't bad. if he gets half a dozen goals for Newcastle before the end of the season and Burnley get half a dozen less without him, that could easily be the difference between them staying up or not, and if that happens he will be a bargain.

Tbf we weren’t pulling any trees up ourselves at the time.
When we lost away to WBA around Christmas time I’m pretty sure we were In the bottom 3.

Just reading the BBC Sport article on the Toon and it appears that Steady Eddie has already bought into the Geordie delusion of grandeur. He says that players will want to join the club because of its "history".
That'll be the history of the most recent domestic trophy win 66 years ago. It will also be the history which includes attendances down to only 12k of their fantastic fans when they were in the old 2nd division pre-Keegan.

They really do seem to believe they are something they are not.
I think the history Eddie Howe was talking about is the one generated by a fawning media rather than anything achieved on the pitch.
