Newcastle: Where Were You When You Were s***?

Even in the 80's selling our best players every year, we were in the best 6-8 supported clubs in the country, despite being in the top 10 once, and as I said we were the third best supported club in the country despite being in Division Two in 1984. I don't know where these myths come from, it's usually bourne out of jealousy, as when you divide success by attendances over the last 60 years, there really isn't a comparable club that I know of in world football. Our gates in that league are almost double what Leeds, with a catchment area double ours, have been getting no mention of them eh? So apart from 1991, what else can you say about our gates, two dodgy ones in the economic clutch of the very early 80's?

Newcastle and City should not criticise each other for dodgy gates. I thought the chant this weekend was ridiculous - save the abuse for Chelsea, Leeds, Sunderland and others.

There are issues behind some of the average attendances since 1989 onwards (particularly for City as Maine Road's capacity during the period from 1992 to 2003 was severly restricted and, during the period 1992 to 1995 building work meant capacity for some games was as low as 20,000).

In good times Newcastle get enormous crowds, but in bad times their attendances do drop off at an alarming rate - 16,001 in 1980-81 (26th best in League, when City's was 33,587 - 4th best in League), 17,276 in 1981-82 (17th best in League, City's was 34,063 - 4th best again).

Analysis in 2002 showed that City's ultimate all-time average attendance position was 7th while Newcastle's was 6th. Ahead of us were Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd, Everton and Spurs. Since 2002 Arsenal, Utd, City & Newcastle's all-time averages will have increased, while the other clubs would probably have dropped a little.

I've just calculated City's all-time average attendance for the updated version of "Manchester A Football History" coming out at Christmas - the figure stands at 29,555 (based on every League game). According to Newcastle stats (so I don't know if they've used the same approach but it's the best we have) their all-time average stands at 30,315 - not much difference between the sides really, considering capacity restrictions and so on.

football supporters are normally ignorant/stupid in the extreme.its just a chant at a football game- and since the rise of chelsea this has become the usual one to sing..newcastle fans should be asked " where were you when you were good???" the most deluded fans on earth and i speak as an evertonian ffs

I meant to add that you could also use the song for Utd - analysis for my book shows that Utd's all-time average attendance stands at 37,480. Their post war figure is 49,037 but their pre-war figure was 19,035. Both City & Newcastle's support has tended to be consistent throughout football history (with the occasional blips based on capacity issues; boycotts etc.) but United's pre-war record was abysmal in comparison with their post-war figures.

Where were you when you were good? pmsl

You averaged 31,000 in a 54,000 stadium in the booming late 80's when you won the league! You came 7th in 1984, winning a FA Cup in the same season with the best team in your history and averaged 19,000. Everton pmsl. Come back when you can bring more than 1500 fans here. Moyes - the biggest overachiever in English football. Fuckin Everton pmsl.

I live amongst them believe me thy are the most DELUDED,INBRED, HALFWITTED morons on the planet. Oh the grief I have had this weak about NDJ!!!!!!

Which season pre Keegan? Higher than yours in 1964 no doubt though. We've averaged under 20,000 three times in our history.

Confused about this - I assume you mean since 1919 because before that you averaged less than 20,000 a few times, including 13,575 in 1914-15 which I believe is your lowest 20th Century average attendance.

Since 1919 City have averaged less than 20,000 in 3 seasons as well. Our lowest average attendance of the 20th Century was 14,753.

Was about a 3000 difference now.

Man Utd 37,365

Liverpool 33,944
Tottenham 33,487
Arsenal 32,713
Chelsea 31,514
Newcastle 31,330

Everton 31,113
Man City 28,905
Aston Villa 28,188
Leeds 25,618
Sunderland 25,100

Highly creditable that, 29,000 given your bleak years.

-- Tue Oct 05, 2010 12:38 pm --

There's no saving grace about Liverpool. I went to Sarajevo to watch the toon in 2003, and it was just after the war, it was a nicer, more aesthetically pleasing place than Merseyside despite every single building having bullet holes in it. You don't bring any fans here because your support is shit, funny Liverpool and Leeds sell out despite our cuntish OB and stewards, and if your most expensive tickets were any more than the £34 they are now you woudn't even get the 36,000 you did against Man Utd this season.

The figures are wrong, or at least the City and United figures are incorrect. I've done lots of research on this and, although pre-war attendances are hard to prove, there is a significant difference in the website's calculation of City's attendances. According to the Newcastle website you've quoted City's aggregate was 62,059,870 but it's actually 63,454,469 (up to end of 2009-10 season.

That site says Utd's was 79,869,486 it's actually a little lower - 79,681,929.
