Newton Heath Market Closes...

Very sad ,good spot for a skate park?

no what they will do is, flatten it at a cost to the taxpayer

then put nowt on the land, and get no income whatsoever from it

the mind boggles how they come to these decisions, think that report says the market was only revamped two years ago, great forward planning that, blast a load of cash at it, only to close it down two years later.
no doubt after the revamp, the cost of having a stall skyrocketed, forcing stallholders to either pack up or put up prices to survive, not the way to attract people in.

rant over

should have made it a open market even a second hand market and carboot at the weekend

the second hand markets do really well at grey mare lane and salford
and carboots can make £15 upwards a pitch on sundays

It is a shame but it had run it's course and had been on a downward spiral for many years. Good news is Hazel's butty shop is now located on Old Church street , freshly carved Ham, Turkey etc full salad inc egg and beetroot £1.45 quality and value.

Worked on that market when In was about 13 (1976) setting up a stall that sold carpets. Got all my major domo's from there. Used to walk up from ten acres lane with my Gran for a pot of dripping on a sunday aft...
Good times.

how mad is that,i worked with a carpet guy on there in the mid 60's i was about 11/12, i'd serve old dears with rugs etc, if that guy did'nt want me i'd sell fruit and veg at the top end, near the other gates.

later on i left school in 1970 and got a job at Smiths the grocers on old church street, i was there a while. when i got my wages i'd pop on to the market to get the latest tunes from the record stall, it was just through the main gates on the right hand side of the first aisle.

happy days indeed.

Revenge of the stallholders!

I was another who used to be taken to "The market" (Conran Street) as a kid.

Bill Brown's fruit and veg stall was where all the stuff was bought.

And, do you remember Michael Walsh, former Bolton and City player (for about one game), well his mum Barbara used to have a children's clothing stall on there. This was after moving from her shop "Barbara's Boutique" which was a shop on Rochdale Road opposite where I used to live near Blackley Conservative Club.

I used to love looking at the toy stall.

I have to stop now I'm starting to fill up...
