Newton Heath Market Closes...

Used to get dragged round Newton Heath market as a kid in the 70s, and then into the working mens club next door when it first opened after it moved from just off Dean Lane. I'd like to know if anyone else remembers that old club.

And someone mentioned Conran Street Market as well. I moved round there in 1976 and that high wall was round it even then.

With regards to any market it is never just a case of set it up and leave it.

Between Manchester City Council and other "development" agencies Newton Heath Market has been rammed into the ground.

I am here to fight the council every step of the way. Newton Heath Market has been part of North Manchester for over 80 years. However, very little has been done to promote the market.

It was "improved" but the so called improvements are questionable. Take any business, remove half of the abilty for it to sell and you reduce it's survival rate.

As for the supermarkets being the problem, I would have to disagree. Two of the best markets in the North West have supermarkets beside them. A supermarket can not change as fast as a market. With supply etc a supermarket will take at least 5 weeks to make any changes. These changes are small to say the least. Watch next time your buying something. A market can change from week to week.

Here is where the problem lies. A mixture of stall are needed. An amount of permanent stalls and an amount of rotating stalls. This means new products and services are always being offered to the community. This is why Car Boot Sales work so well.

I hope you will all offer you support on my Facebook page and support the SAVE Newton Heath Market group. Here is a link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=1 ... 641&v=info

I hope to see you all there soon. I would love to find out what you want from a local market.

Thanks

Hi,

Found your comments regarding Newton Heath Market whilst searching for any old pictures of the place.

You may be interested in the current campaign to kick start the market again. All support is very much welcome as are ideas for stalls, any help/advice or any other comments, pictures etc.

This is the link on Facebook, but if it doesn't work, you can find it by typing in Save Newton Heath Market.

Cant believe its closed, I used to work on the 3 Cake and Bread stalls on the left from Old Church street Entrance when I was a kid ('77 to '87) Wed and Sat.
Saturdays were mad busy, we always had queues ;- we sold thousands of oven bottom muffins (6 for 25p), Cadburys reject cakes, Mr Kiplings "nearly" out of date cakes for 20p.....
Happy Memories, and crap cups of polystyrene tea from the burger van at the entrance !
